Starving For Perfection

--

Starving for perfection;

She’s dying to be thin.

Nothing’s ever good enough;

She’s clawing at her skin.

--

Outside she must be beautiful,

For within she is unsound.

The obsession only strengthens

With the loss of every pound.

--

Always more to waste away;

She wants to disappear.

She lies to cover her condition,

The smile’s a veneer.

--

In hunger there is strength

And in pain there is perfection.

Her beauty lies in toilet bowls;

Her control within rejection.

--

She retches up her failure;

She regurgitates her soul.

The desperate voices in her head

Begin to take their toll.

--

There’s a knock at the bathroom door.

Post-vomit shudders wrack her spine.

“Are you alright?”

Yeah…I’m fine.
