Chapter Thirty
LAKEN
‘Hmmm,’ Asmara thought loudly and deliberately. She pressed a single finger to her chin and mused.
Laken moved towards her with the intention of pleading with her, it was the last resort because he knew how Asmara was so hard to deter from the things she had her mind set on doing. She was a very hard headed woman, and she hadn’t always been that way, she had once been a very delectable young woman who knew when she should and shouldn’t use her powers, but now she was just out of control. If she killed the current wise ones what would stop her from killing the others that she had no ‘agenda’ with when they suddenly seemed of no use to her? Had he made her this way? Would it have been better to have let Virtue’s plans go ahead the first time? It may have been better that way. At least Asmara wouldn’t be so powerful after centuries of deep sleep. If he hadn’t interfered that night then maybe Asmara wouldn’t be so mad –but really there was really no way of telling.
‘Asmara, please don’t kill them?’
Asmara looked at him and she crossed her arms. ‘Laken, don’t plead with me for their lives, you know, just as I do that life our lives will be better without them.’
‘That may not be true,’ he said to her quickly. ‘Some of these immortals need authority.’
‘Well, then they will come to me.’ Asmara smiled.
Laken glared at her in disbelief.
‘Why not come to the most powerful Immortal for guidance on their powers and their thoughts and feelings, I have them too and with so many years in that sleep state I been able to tap into so many people’s souls...and I think I understand how people think and what they need and it’s the same as any immortals.’ She continued.
‘Asmara…?’
‘Stop hindering me!’ She yelled at him suddenly and she waved him back from her, and he stumbled and fell onto his back. ‘I am going to kill them and there is nothing none of you can do or say to stop me from changing my mind…I’ve had too long to think about this.’
Alaina helped Laken up off the ground and she brushed him off.
‘I think you should just give up,’ she said and she linked her arm in his, ‘she has a mind set and you know you can’t do anything to stop her, Laken.’
Laken nodded but he looked to Emmanuelle and frowned. She could stop Asmara, she was the only one that could hurt Asmara even in the slightest, and she had to do something or at least try. Emmanuelle was staring at something in the sky, just as Malcolm was…
EMMANUELLE
The ‘All Seeing Eye’ symbol was twisting into something unrecognisable, and was starting to disappear from the sky that was gradually brightening, and becoming a dull blue colour. Emmanuelle and Malcolm stared up at the silver light in the sky that was collapsing in on it self almost in a dying star like fashion, when only a small tennis ball sized ball of light was left it fell into the sea. Malcolm looked at Emmanuelle.
‘What the hell…?’
Malcolm reached out to the water in order to reach out for the ball of light with his powers but nothing happened. At first Emmanuelle thought that she had messed up his powers by draining him of them, but then she remembered that Asmara had said that none of the immortal (except her) could use their powers in such close proximity to her.
‘I can’t use my powers.’ He said and she could feel his frustration as he tried over and over again.
‘Okay, Malcolm, I’ll go and look for it.’
‘No…’
‘I’m a reasonable swimmer…you know, when I’m not unconscious.’ She told him, she took a deep breath before she jumped into the water.
The water was dark and not to mention unbearably cold but she couldn’t let that stop her, she had to see what had dropped out of the sky, because it could have been something important. She swam off into the darkness until she saw a silver light beneath her.
That must be it! She thought.
She dived down and swam as fast as she could because she had held her breath poorly and she could feel herself gagging. Emmanuelle picked up the silver thing from the sandy lake bottom.
Emmanuelle... she heard all around her.
She would have stared at it forever trying to figure out what it was and why it had fallen from the sky (and where that voice had come from), but her lungs were becoming saw and her brain was telling her to breathe! Emmanuelle broke the surface and threw the silver thing to Malcolm, but he dropped itas soon as he caught itand swore to the sky.
‘FUCK SHIT!’ he yelled and waved his hands about.
And despite his outburst he hadn’t disturbed Asmara from whatever she was doing further away from them - with her hands to the sky, but the other immortals were looking.
‘What?’ Emmanuelle mumbled as she clambered onto the lake side.
‘That thing is hot!’
Emmanuelle got to her feet and she picked up the silver sphere and shook her head. ‘No it isn’t…here?’
Malcolm moved away from her. ‘I don’t think I’m supposed to touch it…plus that looks like some intricate magic that only Virtue and Karis know about.’
Emmanuelle looked at the sphere and she saw herself reflected on its shiny exterior...
LAKEN
A dark light descended down upon the Wise Ones and they all began to scream, they were dying slowly and Laken could not bear to watch it, especially as Asmara was laughing as she killed them all.
‘Oh my God.’ Alaina mumbled.
‘Emmanuelle, do something!’ He yelled out to Emmanuelle but she paid no attention to him. She was too interested in something that she was holding in her hand.
EMMANUELLE
There was something about that little sphere of silver light that she held in her palm, she tore her eyes away from it when she heard someone call our ‘Karis’. Where had Karis been for all this time? And why was she holding a golden bow and loading it with a golden arrow that seemed as ethereal as the sphere Emmanuelle was holding on to? Emmanuelle moved closer to get a good look. Karis had gone unnoticed by Asmara who was in a trance as she slowly killed the Wise Ones.
‘Immortals, leave here now!’
Malcolm grabbed Emmanuelle’s hand and pulled her through the trees and into the darkness of the forest. He was bringing her away from the others and through another part of the forest she had never gone through before.
‘EMMANUELLE!’ she heard Sinead yell.
Emmanuelle stopped and Malcolm let go of her hand.
Sinead hunched over breathing heavily. ‘Don’t…leave…me!’ she exclaimed even though she was out of breath.
‘I wouldn't think of it...I didn't even know you were there.’ Emmanuelle took her hand.
Malcolm looked at them both and smiled faintly. ‘Lets go before all hell breaks loose between them two.’ He said and he led the way.
‘Emma?’ Sinead mumbled and she took a deep breath.
‘Yes?’
‘Karis wishes you luck, she told me to tell you that…’ Sinead took a deep breath and then slowly released it. ‘Emmanuelle, I’ve never really been scared before, well not as much as I am now- but I’m scared for you…’
Suddenly they heard a loud scream and they all stopped. None of them knew if it was Karis or Asmara…nordid theywant to know. Emmanuelle felt Malcolm grab her hand and he pulled her along.
'Come on!' he said quickly.
Sorry but...
I had every intention of cutting it off when everything was just getting juicy! Don't hate me :p
You won’t get to find out what happens between Asmara and Karis until the next story…but I hope I have you thinking about lots of things…
Look out for ‘Saviour’; that’s the next one. I hope you choose to keep reading :)
