Chapter One
Ever since I can remember I have been treated as nothing more than a mere child, I mean sure I had looks, the style, and grades to be considered a cool High School student but there are times when I was looked upon as nothing but a child. Even after my junior year of High school I was still looked upon as a child which drove me to excel more, so I cut myself from all contact of people and the outside world. I wanted so much to be looked upon as a true adult but it just wasn’t cutting it. My hard work and good grades led me to going to college earlier than planned. Maybe I could start fresh and have a better life anew….Maybe this time I could be considered a true adult.
I decided to dress more like an adult by simply wearing my hair in the simplest of styles, no pigtails for me anymore. I wore my hair in a simple ponytail tied with a black ribbon. I stopped wearing my colorful clothes and started wearing black dress pants, and white dress shirts with a simple vest, and even decided to wear my glasses instead of contacts. My whole life was going to be start anew; I couldn’t wait until I got among the college crowd. Maybe this time I can be a new me. A new person…A new Meimi Tachibana….
“Meimi!” called out a girl with dark red hair that was pulled into a bun. “I cannot believe that you aced another exam, you are so amazing!”
Meimi smiled. “Thank you very much but I only study day and night because it’s better than flunking out of college.”
“You’re going to be really popular with the boys,” said the girl as she smiled. “You are just so nice and kind to everyone.”
“Oh stop it Akira, I am not here to fall in love,” said Meimi. “I am here to excel and become a teacher, so the future generation will need a strong teacher.”
Akira stared at Meimi with wide eyes. “Do you have a dark past that you don’t want to tell me about?” she asked. “I am your best friend you’re supposed to tell me everything.”
“I am sorry but it’s just the way I am,” said Meimi. “And that is the way I am going to stay.”
Akira sighed. “Alright…see you back at the dorm.” She said walking off in the opposite direction.
Meimi sighed and headed towards the library. “I can’t believe that Akira said that I would be popular with the boys…I am not going to bother myself with trivial things like that.”
Meimi suddenly heard music playing from the other side of the campus; it was the sound of a violin. She couldn’t stop herself from searching for the sound; her legs carried her to the front of the student center. There standing on a table stood the most handsome young man she had ever seen…he had dark hair that had bangs falling over a pair of beautiful green eyes.
“Is he for real?” Meimi Whispered to herself as she stopped a few feet away from him. “He looks just like a prince in a fairy tale….”
“A fairy tale?! What are you thinking girl, you sound like a child having such thoughts!” A voice in Meimi’s head nagged her.
“You’re right, I’ll just turn around and go the other way…” said Meimi as she turned around to head back to the library. “I do not need to think about boys at the moment…even if he had pretty eyes.”
“Talking to yourself again Meimi?” asked Motoko. “You really scare people when you do that.”
“Motoko how long have you been standing there?!” cried Meimi.
”Long enough to watch you drool over Hiroki.” Said Motoko as she shifted her backpack to the other shoulder. “He’s in the school’s concert band, he also plays cricket, and he’s also part of the National Honors society. Every girl wants to be his girlfriend but he is so quiet and mysterious that no girl would ever have the guts to talk to him.”
Meimi had stopped listening to Motoko after she mentioned the mystery guy’s name to her. ‘Hiroki…what a cute name…’she thought to herself. ‘He is so perfect, and cute!’
“Hello Earth to Meimi,” said Motoko waving her hand in front of Meimi’s face. “Anyone in there?”
Meimi gasped. “Oh hi Motoko when did you get here?”
“You’re hopeless.” Said Motoko as she shook her head.
“Meimi, I thought you said that you weren’t interested in boys,” said Akira. “You said you’d rather excel than chase after boys like some common Grade School child.”
“I don’t,” said Meimi quickly. “I am just surprised that there is someone who might share the same intellectual views as me is going to this college as well.”
“Um…could you speak in English please?” asked Motoko as she groaned. “We barely understand what you are saying when you speak like a text book.”
“There is another person on this campus who shares the same interest I do.” Said Meimi.
“You’re just covering up the fact that you like him.” Said Akira as she got starry eyed. “How cute!”
“Our little Meimi is graduating from school books to boys with looks!” squealed Motoko.
“Girls knock it off,” said Meimi. “It’s not like that at all, I am just happy to have someone else who must like academics as much as I do.”
“That is not entirely true,” said Akira. “You are on the tennis team, and also you are an anime otaku.”
“Don’t mention that out loud!” Said Meimi. “Do you want the whole world to hear you?”
“Not really...” said Akira. “But one day you are going to have to stop hiding your true self from everyone.”
“When that day comes I’ll be prepared for it.” Said Meimi. “In the mean time I am going to remain being an academic scholar.”
“Whatever….” Said Motoko and Akira.
She had decided to go buy another manga since she finished reading the one she bought last week. Sure she was trying to act like an adult but there was nothing saying that she couldn’t be an otaku as well.
“Ah there it is!” said Meimi as she reached to grab the book only to have another person grab it. “Hey give me that!”
“Oh I am sorry,” said the mysterious person. “Here I am sorry for taking the manga you were reaching for.”
Meimi nearly died from embarrassment when she saw who she nearly tried to kill. “Hiroki?!”
Hiroki smiled. “Hey there, your name is Meimi right?” he asked. “I saw you earlier with your friends.”
Meimi smiled and nodded. “I am sorry for staring at you while you played the violin! I was really impressed.”
Hiroki smiled. “It’s no problem I am happy that someone at least watched.” He said. “Everyone else seems to be afraid of me.”
Meimi smiled internally as her mind began to sing. ‘Hiroki is a hottie hot hottie, I am so happy he doesn’t think I am a child.’
“Um…Meimi,” said Hiroki. “You want to hang out for a bit, I don’t have to go to another band practice for another hour. “
Meimi nodded. “Ok! Let’s go to the Black hat café!” she said. “We can hear the poetry being read.”
“I was thinking of something else,” said Hiroki as he grabbed Meimi’s hand and led her out the book store.
“Para Para Dancing?”
Meimi watched as Hiroki played Para Para Dancing. She couldn’t believe that someone as mature as Hiroki played video games. Especially dance games.
“Hey Meimi you have got to try this!” said Hiroki as he let out a carefree laugh. “I am sure that you learn fast.”
Meimi nodded. “Alright but I have to warn you that I am not really great at dancing.” She said as she inserted a quarter in the arcade unit.
Hiroki watched as Meimi played Para Para Dancing like an expert. She wasn’t only a genius but amazing as well, there was nothing that she couldn’t do.
Meimi smiled as she danced along to the song that she had chosen. She was going to impress Hiroki with her dancing skills. “Oh wow! I got a high score what a surprise!”
Hiroki laughed. “That is a surprise Mei.”
Meimi blushed. ‘He called me Mei!’
