Chapter 4
As always, I woke up almost at 6:30 on the dot. I don’t know if anyone else has this problem/gift, but my body automatically wakes me up whether I’m still tired or not.
Groaning because I’d left the shades partly open, I rolled out of the bed and shuffled around until I found my trunks and work shirt. On several occasions I’ve been told that I am so lucky for having such a fun job, and I’m always tempted to tell them that fun jobs don’t pay well, but stop myself. No need taking out my bitterness of rich America on innocent people, most of whom live in similar conditions to my own.
After finding my sandals under my bed I walked out into the kitchen/dining room/living room and grabbed a banana off the counter. My mom’s door had been open when I passed it, meaning she had already left for work. Quickly eating my banana, which was still mostly green and gross, I grabbed my workbag and the car keys and ran out of the apartment.
Near the far right section of the parking lot (gravel pit would be more accurate…) I saw that mom had left the car for me, how nice. Since I really didn’t feel like contemplating why she had again left me the car, I climbed in and jammed the radio button on to my beautiful rock station. As soon as a boy’s screaming voice competing with guitars filled the car, everything just felt right. I started the car up and pulled out, getting my familiar early morning drive rush. As I headed down the road towards the nicer part of town I spotted a large pink something running after me.
Instead of being normal and driving faster to get away, I pulled over and waited for Big Pink Thing to catch up to me. Sure enough it was Trev, who looked about to wet himself he was so happy.
“Get out of the car, I need to touch you!” Trevor said, prying the door open before I’d even put the car into park.
“Hold on, will you? This isn’t even my car!” I shouted as I was removed from the seat and swung around like a doll.
“Ugh, holding you feels so damn right, doesn’t it?” He sighed; still clutching me so tightly only my toes scraped the road.
“This is all very touching, but I need to get to work.” I glared at his ear, since it was the closest I could get to his face in my current position.
“But why? I don’t want anyone else with you.” He put me down anyway, and took in my outfit.
“Where do you work, it looks like you’re going swimming to me.” I rolled my eyes and got back in the car.
“I’m a swim instructor, so yes I am going swimming.” I started the car back up, and I was sad to find the song had changed, though it was another good one so I wasn’t quite homicidal.
Trevor climbed into the seat next to me, crinkling his nose at something. “When was the last time you cleaned this thing, it smells kind of old in here.” I chose to ignore his comment and sped up, getting a crazed look in my eye like I always do when old metallica comes on.
“So you really do listen to this… stuff, don’t you?” Trevor asked, looking at the car radio as if it could bite.
“It’s music. I don’t just listen to this, if it scares you. You can put on anything but jazz or easy listening.” By that point I wasn’t even listening to what came out of my mouth, I was so busy wondering if he would try getting into the pool with me. A shudder escaped me, and Trevor switched the station, thinking that’s what I was reacting to.
“You better not come in with me, I’m dead serious. Unlike you apparently, I need this job so if you screw this up and somehow get me fired, I WILL kill you.” I snapped, jerking the parking brake up violently and getting out of the car, slamming the door a little harder than necessary.
“Yes ma’am.” He said, poking me in my side as I headed to the front door of the pool building and unlocked it. “I’ll just wait out here for you. Missing every second you’re away.” I fake-gagged and walked inside, the door closing right after I heard him say, “Don’t let anyone else ogle you shirtless.”
There’s a half-hour break at 12:30, and I snuck away from the other instructors and lifeguards to go check on Trevor. At the beginning of the morning he’d been distracting me by jumping around past the glass doors, and once he started climbing the fence. One dirty look from me had him scrambling back off though.
I found him stretched out on one of the stone benched under a tree talking on his cell phone. He shut it as soon as he spotted me.
“Hey babe, about time you came over here.” He said, grabbing me by the hips and forcing me to sit on his lap facing him.
“Want something to eat? I could sneak you out something.” I said, in one of the few polite moments of my life.
Trevor perked up at the suggestion of food, and grinned broadly at me. “What they got? Anything meaty I’ll eat.” I nodded, and started to get up to get him something.
“Uh-uh, stay a little longer first.” He said, suddenly whiny, and wrapped his arms around me as he kissed by my ear.
“Alright, but I only have a half hour total before I have to get back.” I said, slowly melting as he kissed his way down to my neck and then to the edge of my shoulder which he bit none too gently.
“Fine, but I get you the whole half hour.” His hands run up and down my bare wet back before settling on my ass.
“You don’t want to eat?” I couldn’t help but ask since his fastness was scaring me.
“Just you.” He pulled back from where he’d been gnawing my shoulder to smirk at me.
“I don’t think so…” I stated, pulling away from him and attempting to calm myself down since I was standing in only wet swim trunks.
Trevor sat watching me silently, his gaze more calculating than I’d seen before. “When do you finally get off?”
“At 3, so not that much longer.” I said, looking up when I heard an angry gasp behind me.
“What’s going on?” Nyki asked, having just arrived for the afternoon shift. I was pleased to see her angry gaze was directed towards Trevor, and not me.
“Nothing he can’t handle for himself, so why don’t you mind yourself bitch.” Trevor snapped, making her lunge for him. I jumped in between and grabbed her, struggling to pull her back.
“Trev, shut up before I beat you. It’s ok, he followed me here, and no he wasn’t about to rape me or anything.” I said, managing to get Nyki to back off enough that I could let go.
“This is ridiculous Nate, he FOLLOWED you to work? How old are you anyway kid?” Nyki said, her dark eyes still fixed harshly on Trevor who was “fixing” his badly died blond hair.
“I don’t feel I have to answer that.” Trevor said immaturely, pouting as if he wanted me to defend him or something.
“I have to get back to work soon anyway, we might as well head in.” I said, pecking Trev on the cheek when he started to protest, then followed Nyki’s angry steps into the pool.
“I’m serious Nate, what’s going on and who is that guy? He does NOT look our age, and more importantly he’s got loser practically stitched to his face. I thought you had better taste than that.” She began, setting her bag down next to mine and kicking her flip flops off.
“To be honest, I don’t really know what’s going on. He was just some guy who met me on the bus yesterday and we um… “hung out” at Summerfest, and he chased my car this morning. What was I supposed to do? It’s not like I have a ton of experience with guys chasing after me.” I allowed a pout to grace my face before I noticed she wasn’t amused.
“I’m going to completely ignore that self-pitying bit Nate, because it’s not even worth commenting. Have you lost your mind though? First of all, and I hate to be the judgmental, prejudicial one here, but he doesn’t look like he even lives over here. I never pegged you for having something for someone so…well…pink. What could you guys possibly even talk about?” She brushed her bangs from her face, an obvious sign of agitation, before she gave me what we call the “Joey Potter” eyes. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Guess then that it saves me the embarrassment of having to explain how I know the names of the characters from that show…
“Look, just for once let me do what ever the hell I want without having a running commentary on it.” I said, folding my arms across my chest when she didn’t even flinch.
“Oh shut up, you know you like it when I mother hen you. Besides, if I don’t look out for you who will? You certainly can’t take care of your puny little self.” She pinched my ribs painfully before standing up and stretching.
I followed suit, watching Trev watching me through the glass doors, a childish scowl on his face. I knew even then that Nyki had a point, but I’d be damned to let her know that.
I’d barely jumped in the pool when our first afternoon class started arriving. By the time three o’clock came I was beyond ready to get home. I jumped out of the pool, said good bye to everyone, and ran for the showers. As soon as I was done and changed into real clothes, I snuck out the side door only to find Trev waiting for me there.
“Get over here.” He said, scooping me up and twirling me around like earlier. Nyki passed behind us huffing disapprovingly as she and a lifeguard headed out to a blue cruiser car waiting for them in the parking lot.
“Missed me that bad, eh?” I said through a laugh once I’d been put back on the ground.
“Do you have any idea how tempting you are wet? It was like torture having to watch you behind those stupid doors.”
I smiled up at him and tried to place an innocent kiss to his lips, but he wouldn’t have it. One arm wrapped possessively around my waist, the other behind my head as he forced his tongue into my mouth and fully attacking my own tongue. Slowly I got into it, biting down on his lip and his tongue hard enough to draw blood. He immediately jumped back, glaring at me as he wiped blood from his mouth.
“What the fuck was that for?” He asked, still glaring at me though now I’d put my arms around his neck and was smirking at him.
“Can’t handle it?” I wasn’t sure where this playful side of me was coming from, I didn’t even know if I liked the guy at all.
“Oh, I can handle it.” He growled, picking me up and shoving me against the wall of the pool, kissing me roughly. We stood there attached at the mouth for quite some time before I decided air was a necessary evil.
“Well, this is fun and all, but I think I should probably go home…” I said, breaking away from him to grab my stuff. Trevor watched with dark eyes, his breathing still ragged and a disheveled quality to him.
“I can’t follow?”
I smiled, turning around quick to look at him, and shook my head, continuing out to my car.
“We’ll talk later than!” he called, shoving sunglasses onto his face still watching.
“Sure, whatever.” I shout, and race out of the parking lot, checking the rearview mirror to see him still staring after me
