The Words From The Pen You Dropped Here

By Emilee Petersmark

Maybe you should take these words from me

And sing them to yourself

Because they're tearing up my throat, my voice--

Hoarse from screaming apologies--

Can't make them beautiful,

But from your lips, you can spin gold.

I concentrate the night into a glass,

The bitterness keeps my heart awake,

Maybe if I sip it slow, I can make it last,

But the morning is poisoning my drink.

I can't think of what to say--

Your eyes, they steal the sentences

Right from my head. But it's for the best;

All I have is this song that I write for you

And how you bring me down.

You look at me and I can't deny

When you tell me, "this is right."

And with you I can can ignore

The conscience eating at my soul

Because your words are all I need to keep me tonight.

This is nothing like a fairytale--

There's no poetry in the sounds you're drawing from me--

This is substance and it's jealousy,

It's the pain without the glory,

This is every sin they taught us to avoid.

You look at me and I can't deny

When you tell me, "this is right."

And with you I can can ignore

The conscience eating at my soul

Because your words are all I need to keep me tonight.

You don't have to smile if it hurts;

I think you're beautiful anyway.

You don't have to smile if it hurts;

You're beautiful anyway.

You don't have to smile if it hurts;

(This is all that we need for now)

You're beautiful anyway.

(The consequences can't outrun us)

You don't have to smile if it hurts;

(This is everything I need right now)

You're beautiful anyway.

(So write this down)

You don't have to smile if it hurts;

(So write this down)

You're beautiful.
