Chapter 5: Dark Past

Leon was staring deep into the blazing fire, it has been a few nights since we left Neiflheim and Leon had barley spoken.

“Leon, I’ve asked you this before but I need to ask you again. Are you sure you want to continue this journey with me? It isn’t going to get any easier and we might be seeing a lot worst then what happen the other night.”

Leon clinched his teach and sighed, “She might still be alive, I need to save her and stop them from doing the same to any one else.” Leon shouted.

“Aren’t you a heroic one?” I laughed out.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Well, I guess since I am not going to talk you into heading back home you should know what happened. It was about a year ago, I remember the day like it was yesterday. The sun burned in the sky that day, it was the hottest day that summer. I was living in a small village of about 50 people, most of us where farmers.

I lived with a farmer named John and his daughter Sara; John and his wife Amy took care of me when I was little. I never knew my real parents so they were my family. John’s wife Amy soon died when she gave birth to Sara; Now Sara was just about to turn 7 in a few days.

I was working outside feeding the chickens; John was in town selling some of our harvest. Sara ran up to me and pulled on my pant leg. ‘Big brother, where is daddy?’ she asked

‘He is in town selling some of our harvest.’

‘That’s not fair, daddy said he was going to take me in to town and let me pick out a birthday present.’ Sara said in a little angry voice.

‘Alright Sara, we will go into town.’

From the farm town was a good 20 minute walk, but when we got there they sky quickly darkened filled with storm clouds. Rain fell from the sky as lighting ran across the sky; the thunder sang horror sounds across the village. We ran the rest of the way trying to get out of the storm. To only notice when we got to the market it had been destroyed. Booths burned the smell of burning produce stenches the air. Sara yelled at me and pointed her finger at one of the booths. John was laying there; his body was cover in burns. I quickly ran to his help.

‘FATHER! Are you alright?’ I yelled.

John’s eyes rolled up, they where like how I always remembered them, deep and caring. He tried to speak but had trouble getting out the words ‘You need to run son, take Sara and run.’ he mumbled out as he started to spit out blood.

I looked around to see everyone else’s corpses flung around the marketplace some burning while others ripped apart. ‘Father we aren’t leaving you behind.’ I yelled only to see that his eyes had lost the life they once held and that he has left us.

‘What happened?’ cried Sara in fear.

‘We have to get out of here Sara.’

‘What about daddy?!’

‘Daddy is…’ I started to say as a bolt of lighting stuck a near by building having it collapse over the marketplace covering John’s corpse. Sara began to cry as she yelled ‘DADDY!’ the rest was covered over the sound of tears running down her face.

Another bolt struck and hit another building, sending more rubble down. I quickly jumped on top of Sara to protect her as pieces of the building hit me on my back. Once everything stopped falling I stood up and grabbed Sara carrying her in my arms as I began to run out of the village back to the farm.

As I ran I looked behind to see a demon running after us. I started to run as fast as I ever could. It was only a matter of minutes till we reached the farm. I finally stopped and let Sara go.

‘Sara I need you to be a big girl right now and run into the corn field and hide. Don’t come out till I come get you, alright Sara.’ I said to Sara as I gave her a hug.

Sara wiped her eyes and said ‘Are you going to be alright brother’ as she tried to hold back the tears.

‘I’ll be just fine now run.’ I said as she went off into the field.

I quickly ran into the barn and picked up one of the axes off the wall and ran outside. The demon approached ever closer, he was the size of a large man with dark red skin; he had wings that arched out of his back. He raised his right hand to the sky pointing and struck his hand down sending a bolt of lighting right in front of me. I grasped tightly the axe in my hand and charged forward and swung the axe straight into the demon side.

The demon began to laugh. ‘You silly mortal, you think that petty weapon of yours could even hurt me. Now where was that little girl you where with. It has been a while since I have been able to quench my thirst for little girls.’

‘What girl, you must have been seeing things.’ I shouted.

The demon looked into my eyes, and then looked behind me. ‘She is in the corn field.’

I charged forward and punched the demon in the face; his head jolted back for a second as his leg sung up and he kicked me across the farm.

‘You shouldn’t have done that.’ The demon smirked as he snapped his fingers setting the crops in flames.

‘NOOOOOOOOOOO! Sara!’ I yelled in agony.

The demon turned his look on me and grinned ‘Time for you to die like everyone else in this village.’ The demon spoke as he walked towards me. I tried to get back up but I was in too much pain and was only able to cry.

Right before he stood in front of me a light came from the sky that made me blind. All I could here was ‘You… I will kill you one day.’ That’s when I passed out from the loss of blood.”

“Dear god, that is terrible. How did you survive?” Leon said with a look of grief.

“Well when I awoke, I was in side of the house. I went to get up but only cringed in pain.

‘Hey there, you just had a few bones broken don’t try to move yet.’ Came a mysterious voice from the other side of the room. There was a man about the same age as John; he wore a sword at his waist.

‘Did you save me?’

‘No, I was on my way here to visit John and saw you laying half dead of the ground.’

‘Who are you?’

‘I’m an old friend of John, the name Gunnar. We grew up in this village together.’

‘Now get some rest; you need to get better.’

‘What for?’

‘You need to be trained, what happen the other day I just the start of what is going to happen to this world.’

‘How do you know?’ I coughed up.

‘Trust me and get some rest.’ Gunnar said as I faded back to sleep.

After I recovered Gunnar had found an old sword he had left for John years ago and began training me. We spent 9 months training till my sword ability reached Gunnar’s. After that day the next morning I woke up with a short note.

I have taught you everything I know; now it’s your time to take your skills and do what is right. Only you have the power to do the right thing. Much faith, Gunnar

Knowing that I couldn’t let the demon attack my town live for killing John and Sara I set out after this demon. Only to find out his true nature and know how much I need to kill him.”

“Gunnar? You where trained by the Luminita’s leader Gunnar?” Leon screamed.

“Tell you the truth I’m not sure, Gunnar didn’t speak about his past at all.” I said as I looked down at the fire that started to burn out. “We should get some rest. We never know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Also, I’m glad that you want to stick threw this with me. It means a lot.”

“Hah, I can’t let you go saving the world alone.” As we both laughed and went to sleep.
