We would play hide-and-seek inthe playground till we
were worn out and it was dark
out, and then we would lie together
and observe the stars, and perhaps
hum along to some obscure song.

We always fell asleep, yet somehow
you always woke up before I did.
You'd say you watched the sunrise
and elaborate on its
unnecessary beauty.

The next day I woke up early to see
the sun take flight above our surrogate city.

(Somehow, somehow,
you were sleeping next to me.)
