I saw him dump the body.

Well, technically, I didn’t see him doing it. I waited in the car, fiddling with the radio, as he got up, took it out of the trunk, and pushed it over the bridge. I was sure he was doing it.

As he opened his door and slid into the driver’s seat, I knew I had been right. His face was pale and a little sweaty; his eyes were wide and frightened.

“Hey,” he said breathlessly, without even looking at me. I turned off the radio.

“Sweetie,” I cooed, “you’re all worn out. Was the bitch that heavy?”

He didn’t say anything, just stared out the windshield at the night. We were the only car on the bridge.

“Raymond,” I said, my voice getting harder, “it honestly wasn’t that big a deal. Hannah was shallow and she was stupid. She cheated on you, remember? She deserved what she got.”

“She didn’t deserve to i die /i ,” he moaned.

I clenched my teeth. When I asked Raymond out for the first time, I suffered no illusions as to why he said yes. Hannah was the prettiest, most superficial girl in the school, and when Raymond caught her with his brother, it ripped him apart. Personally, I didn’t see the problem. They had only gone out for two months, what was the big deal? But, of course, I never told that to Raymond.

After two weeks of listening to Raymond ramble on and on about Hannah, I realized that the boy would never shut up about her. I like Raymond. I mean, I wasn’t that attracted to him, but he was pretty amusing to watch. You could make him do anything, and he’d seriously think it was his own idea! But this whole Hannah thing really bugged me. I knew only one way to stop her. So we did.

“Why are you acting so i tortured /i ? It’s not like you were responsible. Hannah drank that beer herself.”

“Yeah, but she didn’t know you put bleach in it!”

“ i I /i put bleach in it?” Now I was truly getting annoyed.

“Yeah, Natalie, you! Stop lying! I thought you were nice... I thought I could trust you. You’re a much worse girlfriend than Hannah was. You never call me, I always have to call you, and you never even hold my hand in public! And... Natalie, you i killed /i Hannah. I still can’t believe you did it! This is crazy. You’re crazy.”

Oh, so now he was acting like he was little Mr. Innocent. I kept my voice steady. “Get out of my car.”

After he had stomped away into the night, I got out of the car and got in on the driver’s side. That boy was so nice, he couldn’t imagine anybody else being anything otherwise. And that was his mistake. I turned the radio back on, cranking it up all the way. As I sung along with the lyrics, I thought about how the police would be glad to know who had murdered Hannah. Raymond had no alibi and a perfect motive. I pulled my cell phone out of my purse. Why wait until tomorrow to turn him in? As I dialed Information for the nearest police station, I was feeling better already.
