Je t’aimerai
I remembered your days of happiness,
Where everything you did was great.
You used to speak in French to me,
"Je t'aime pour toujours mon cheri,"
And I'd smile like I'd understood
When I didn't.
I'd hold you close as you whispered in my ear,
"Je t'aimerai jusqu'a je meurs."
I'd push the hair out of your face,
Confused, uncertain about what you'd said.
You showed me your journal where you always wrote
Those gorgeous satin words.
The day that ambulance left your house
Taking you away,
I took your journal and a French dictionary
And sat on your bed, working for an hour,
I translated every word.
I wanted to before you slipped away.
Here is what you had to say:
"I love you forever, my darling,
I will love you until I die."
I couldn't believe all those months,
I never really saw it.
It was right there,
With the letters in the wrong places.
Under your journal entry, you had written:
"Ne me part pas,
Pour si tu fais, je mourirai."
I didn't leave you,
But you died anyway.
