Cat

We don’t belong to anyone.

We don’t even belong to each other.

- -

I may have rescued you from the back alleys and the tomcats,

And you may entertain me on the rainiest of gray days.

But, we will never acknowledge this companionship.

- -

Two souls forever free.

However, we still remain attached somehow

Or another.

- -

You, to your rats,

And me, to my unsavory suitors,

But what’s the difference

Besides that you get to eat them in the end

While this activity would be considered socially

Unsuitable for me.

- -

We are both wild things

Who were never meant for domestic love.

But, still, there are those who think they can own us.

- -

I don’t care enough to give you a name,

And you won’t tell me the truth about who I am

Even though I desperately need to know.

- -

So, we will continue this comical charade

Until we realize that belonging to someone

Will not put us in a cage.

- -

Because these petty insecurities and fears

Are the only bars surrounding us.
