The Transfer

Chapter 1: Meetings at midnight

A girl lounged back in her chair, reading a stack of official looking documents, her expression betrayed nothing but the beginning look of a wicked smile lighting her face. She retracted her gaze from the papers and looked around the room, it was rented, obviously. No one can know of the meeting places of her club so it was often held late into the night at random spots only known by those who know where to look. Twenty-six members of the elite teen group had woken to their mysterious rings pulsing in what outsiders would call a glowing aura. To the members it meant something special, it was time for a meeting. They followed and found necessary clues to the secret place.

A streetlamp from outside cast a glow on hunched figures, all wearing a shining ring. One figure called out a K, then each following him called in hushed tones the remaining letters of the code: G, L, E, R, Q, A, H, O, Y, Z, C, P, N, D, S, W, T, B, X, U, I, M, F, V, J, they then interrogated each other and one by one, filed into the room. Any spy or intruder would be caught, it was the way of the group, and no one of the outside can have information, on penalty of death.

The girl sat up and smiled at them in a victorious fashion. The members looked at each other confusedly, but sat down in their arranged orders. A boy sat beside her with the look of someone who was meant to be a leader. He was her chosen second. If anything were to happen to her, he’d know exactly why, how, where, and when it did. He was smart, cunning, brave, and very charismatic. They all were in fact. Each member of their club would be famous one day.

When each member was settled, they took off their hoods and displayed a colored neon necklace. It was only for further security, and it was for the best. No one had ever broken into their ranks. The leader stood and walked twice around the group, collecting papers, pictures, and items from each of the group, their assignments. She deposited them all into a box and went to stand at the front of the room still smiling the strange smile she had worn when they had come in.

She spoke in an even, relaxing tone, “Does anyone know what theme your assignments were centered on this month?” A girl with curly brown hair stood and waited to be recognized, “Yes,” The leader said.

Aden, I researched the disappearances of fifty teens occurring in the United States in the past year. Could it be about the missing ones?” She asked and sat down.

Aden, the leader, replied happily, “Why yes, but that is not all. Free floor, discuss your assignments.” She sat down next to her second and he looked at her questioningly, but she only shrugged.

My assignment was on the requests to the government from children ages ten to sixteen. None were acknowledged unless they had a considerable sum of money backing it,” a boy in the back called.

My assignment was of the abuse of children. It required field research, and each time I visited the hospitals, the abuse was from different types of people,” a girl closest to the front said.

Aden, what might this be about?” A girl asked.

Aden smiled and sat up straight, preparing to give her speech, “Have you ever wondered what would happen if hundreds of teenagers were to disappear from the United States? Could you imagine what the reaction would be, mass chaos, destruction, and heartache felt worldwide? Teenagers so involved in their communities suddenly disappearing… it would be a wake up call to the government, don’t you think? Money is a major concern in this economy. As Leigh said earlier, ideas by children require a lot of money to be even consider being looked at. Officials look down on children and what they need. Abuse is becoming a big term for our youth. All the people sitting in this room have an opportunity, now, to change this. Through contacts and trusted members of our elite extended group, we have been appointed to change the view of our nation’s youth,” she took a breath, watching the faces of her members. “At this time I am asking those willing to leave their family for approximately two years, to sign this contract. Please, step forward.”

Murmurs swept through the group and eight of the twenty-six stepped up to the table set before Aden and her second’s chair. They looked weary about the whole idea, but were the oldest members in the group, each almost to the age of seventeen, and it seemed to be their duty to sign the contract. Following the eight were two of the youngest, Amy and Jacob, each only fourteen. They were strong and willing to help this cause. Aden was surprised, but smiled encouragingly at them all the same.

The two close friends smiled at each other, nodding as they stepped up to the contract, and signed one after another. Aden let a smirk cross her face. They were going to be a great asset. She could thank Amy for the group’s success. Originally, there were only twenty-five members of her secret society, but a girl, Amy, had begged for this boy to be brought in. Amy had presented all the reasons why the group would benefit and not many could come up with a decent counter for her plea. It was well known Amy had plans for the club and would become leader when she entered the tenth grade. Amy was the third most popular member of the group, even though she was the youngest. It was also a very smart choice on Aden’s part because any disagreements with this girl could become very serious. She was a force to be reckoned with. It was what was to be expected from the president’s daughter.

A total of ten members signed the contract. Aden dismissed the others back to their homes and waited for the fourteen shadows to turn the street corner before turning to observe the members. They seemed to be nervous, but it was to be expected. She smiled once more at them and strolled back to her chair next to her second.

Thank you, for volunteering, it is very much appreciated. Over the next two weeks each of you will disappear and meet up at an abandoned farm my grandmother used to live at. You will only bring three sets of clothes including shoes and other essentials bought in secret from the stash of money you have saved up. Am I correct to assume that you all have at least one hundred dollars?” She waited for each of them to nod and continued, “All right, once you gather all these you will leave, in the order you signed up. No one is to leave together as that would raise suspicion, but one after another, remember that. The order in which you are to leave are as follows: Jamie, you are first, followed by Alan, Tyler, Katie, Tom, Sam, Erin, Zach, Amy, and Jacob. This is all you need to know for now, and you know where to look for the clues that will lead you to the farm. It isn’t far from this room.” She dismissed them with a wave of her hand and watched as they left the room. The last to leave was the pair of Amy and Jacob, each turned to Aden and smiled wickedly, then left. Aden sent a confused look to her second, but he only shrugged.

She sat down across from him and he asked her the question that had been circling his mind, “Will we be staying here, and if we are, who will be in charge of the expedition?”

Aden mimicked Amy’s smile and replied, “Oh, Corey, we’re most certainly staying here, but it will be Amy to lead this mission.”

Corey, her second, looked bewildered. He shook his head and kissed her cheek, “Whatever you think is best, love.” He walked to the door and turned to wait for her.

Aden chuckled at his endearment. They left the room together, holding the box, switching off the light, and locking the door. A gasp emitted from a far corner in the room, and eyes wide, Amy, turned out the side door and met up with Jacob, walking to her very white home.
