The stars are out
The moon is full
They battle in the sky
Each seeking midnight dominance
And a gaze from you and I
The stars believe they’re gorgeous
The moon loves herself, too
The stars are like my heart tonight
And the moon is just like you
Contemptuous, my heart may be
Indignant and denying
She wants to walk away from you
Love keeps the heart from trying
You never seem to notice this
You’re laughing when she’s crying
I can’t help but wonder if
You know, deep down, it’s dying
And my heart cries out defiantly
She won’t go down so fast
She will defeat you easily
This break will be her last
You may not love me; that’s all right
My heart can handle that tonight
But you and I, I know it well
Have already built her prison cell
The heart will fall
Fighting to the end
But she will not have lost
We’ll fall with her, my friend
And the stars fade out
The moon fades away
Quietly they say goodbye
Each would like an armistice
And peace from you and I
