“What is lucky? Are we lucky?”

“Depends on what you call lucky.”

“Is it a happy random chance?”

“If it is, we haven’t a chance.”

“Is it a fateful omen good?”

“If it is, then it does no good.”

“Well come on, man, what is it then?”

“It is that certain aspect when,

God is willing, on whom depend,

Much good is bad He does amend

And makes us smile, when we have cried,

And cried, and bawled, and would have died.

Some know this true; there’s some who don’t

‘Cause oft it comes at times we won’t

Give up our lives and take the bad

To get more good, the worse we’ve had.

If you’re lucky, and bad you’ve got,

You’ll soon be glad, and soon forgot

Or like a dream will troubles be;

So we are lucky: you and me.”
