The Drum of War

by fabian cortez

Branches dispel your coats

& sway to season’s

Breath of longing,

So compared to warmest

Air of comfort

Yet imparted as rarest

Blossoms scent

Remembered

-

Now emptiness, as hollowed

Bones to fingers draped in

Malevolence, encompass

All about, even to extent

Beneath my chest, to grasp

My beating heart

So make it stone

-

For my eyes were un-muddied as

I saw you in embrace, as yet

Another soul’s arms found rest

About your countenance,

So wrapped your wages

Favour to their basest

Course

-

You now shimmer brightly in

A sky as clear as conscience

On a temperate dawn

& its arrival greets

This day with errant

Goodwill

-

So in concord with

Your nature, find

Your home, so end this gluttony

Your avarice for bounty

As meat of treachery

Is carved a different

Tone than that of

Impiety

-

I undergo a graceful sleep,

Reckoning cannot wash

My tainted tendrils mist,

Of soul, of spirits

Reminiscence

So shine your mirror

To another’s wit

For I’ll not shift my

Gaze

-

Roses shall not bloom

Without love’s presence

Trees shall remain bare

As deaths knell tolls

Within a heart so embittered

So beats its drum

Of war
