Chapter Five:
Lang opened his eyes groggily and stretched his stiff fingers towards the car ceiling. Eyes snapped wide, he shot up and gripped the back of the car seat. The car had ceased its rocking motion. Sage glanced back at him and pointed towards a gas station. He saw Dominic inside, buying some stuff for them. In rely, his stomach growled loudly and he held his hands to silence the sound. A moment later, Dominic came back out, holding a large brown paper bag.
“Here,” he said, tossing a couple cans of soda and snacks back towards Lang. Hands ripped open plastic containers and for a few minutes, there was a peaceful silence. Then, Dominic glanced back towards Lang.
“Listen up kid, I’m going to say this once and only once. You’re going to listen so you and your sister will make it out alive.” Dominic said harshly, watching Lang’s reaction. “You hold some knowledge of a killer virus, even though you don’t know it. The Boss will use you and then kill you. I know how that guy works. And he’ll use your sister in every way he wants. And there won’t be anything you can do to stop him. I know you don’t trust us but right now you have to, so you will survive you’ll comply.”
Lang glared at him and then lowered his gaze. Slowly, he nodded even thought he couldn’t trust what he was saying was true or all lies. Everything was riding on this and he needed them just as much as they needed him. But there was one question tugging at the back of his mind.
“What knowledge? What virus? And why do I hold the information?” the questions burst forth from his lips. Dominic sighed and rubbed his temples. It was going to be hard to explain to the kid all of this.
“Nearly twelve years ago, your father and a group of seven others came up with and designed a virus that will destroy every living person if commanded. But it’s a lot more complicated than that. Knowing that they could be hunted for this knowledge, they had to choose one person to hold this knowledge. This person is you, Lang. Do you remember anything past eight years old? They had to take a male, nowhere near puberty to make this work. A child of that age would be able to forget this quickly and go on with their life with no problem; unless they were hunted. You are not the only one with the knowledge implanted in your mind. But, you are the second one living that can help the Boss. There’s not simple way of extracting this knowledge either. The other eight children we’ve caught died during the process and they were no longer of any use to us. The second person who holds the knowledge disappeared nearly four years ago. So, you are their only hope and they’ll do anything for you to be brought to them safely.”
Lang only listened to the first part and tuned out the last bit. New questions were flooding his mind because he couldn’t remember anything past eight years old. It was frustrating and bothersome to know you held some special knowledge and you never knew.
“Do you understand now?” Dominic asked quietly, seeing the emotions crossing the kid’s eyes. Lang barely nodded, his fists balled up tighter and he felt like striking at something.
“So, I’m a pawn then?” he whispered, his head hanging low and his heart thumping loudly in his ears. He heard Dominic’s intake and took that as an answer. He raised his head, his eyes blank but blazing brightly. “I’ll show that guy he chose the wrong guy to mess with,” Lang growled, slamming his fist into the leather seat. Up front, Dominic’s eyes glittered as his face broke out into a smile.
Stuffing his large hands into the two tiny spots, he trudged after them, picking his way among the rocky path carefully. A stone jarred loose and he nearly fell face first into the frozen dirt. Sage and Dominic looked back, put their index fingers to their lips to tell him to be quiet. He nodded and nearly grumbled out but he kept his thoughts to himself.
“Be careful around here now Lang,” Sage whispered, glancing back to stare at him for a moment. “From here on out, everything is marked out with lazars and anyone who steps on one will be killed rather quickly.”
He nodded, taking in her warning. He glanced around nervously before hurrying after them. He didn’t want to find out what might really happen. Glancing up towards the edge of the tall tree tops, he noticed it steadily growing darker and much colder.
“Are we nearly there yet?” he whined quietly, wanting to get there to see his sister for the first time in years. Both whipped around quickly, their fingers to their lips. He mentally sighed and his shoulders slumped. He didn’t like being patient, he didn’t like knowing he held all kinds of important knowledge and he hated knowing someone held his sister against her will. He balled his hands up again and for a moment he nearly screamed. But instead he kicked up a rock and kicked it past Dominic and Sage. All three watched as the stone fell outside the tiny marked trail and a small red beam spotted it quickly and a moment later a loud bang sounded. Frozen to his spot, Lang nearly died right there when he saw what happened to the rock.
Sage and Dominic turned their icy gazes towards him and watched as he shrugged his shoulders and glared away. Neither one could blame him for being impatient but if he didn’t stop, he’d wind up getting both of them killed and he would die later, too.
“Be patient Lang, we’re almost there.” Sage said quietly, leading the way further into the dark, uninviting forest. Lang nodded quickly and followed up after them.
“The sooner the better so I can kill the bastard that did this.” Lang hissed, glaring back at what he was going to leave behind.
