Wait
She walked into Zac's the other day
And looked at the menu.
"Can I help you?" he asked,
Fingers poised on the register,
Eyes glued to a wondering,
Smiling face.
"Just a Coke," she replied,
"And a crab cake sandwich."
She handed him the money,
And took a seat by the window.
Looking out at the street,
She felt lonelinenss close in,
And her smile begin to waver.
Then she saw him approach,
A basket and cup in hand.
She thanked him softly,
And he leaned in close to better hear,
Brushing his cheek to her hair.
"I'm sorry," he quickly said,
But didn't mean it
And didn't move.
Shocked, she took a sip of Coke,
And looked down at the table.
There were so many things
In the back of his mind.
He wanted to tell her she was beautiful,
With the most stunning eyes of any girl
To ever frequent Zac's.
It was at that moment,
As he watched from behind the counter,
That he knew he had crossed his Fate.
She threw out her trash,
And headed for the door.
He saw his entire future leave forevermore,
And stood up quickly, shouting loudly,
A single, saving word.
Wait!
