Melanie’s Travels
Story Four: Melanie The Spy
Christmas eve, Jay called her to tell her a fabricated lie she knew he was using to try and get her back by a deadline, “I’m in Colorado for Marine training right now,”
“Oh, really? How nice,” She knew he was lying.
“Nah, I’m not in Colorado. But I will be by January 22,”
“Oh cool. Yeah? I’ll call you back bye,” She hung up, not wanting to hear his stupidity.
He called her again for New Year’s, telling her how he was drunk again for the 100th time or so--she didn’t want to hear it. When she hung up and saw him online, she told him straight up: I don’t want you to tell me that shit. You wanna call me? Call me to ask how I’m doing and what I will be up to. Not for trying to get me back.
She signed off, smiling.
School started again on January 3rd. Isabelle and Antony were there early as usual, since they took the 86 to school every morning. He spoke to them, and they noticed he smelled--of weed. When they told Melanie, she became incredibly suspicious. He told her that he could not smoke weed under any circumstances because he received blood tests every two weeks from the military. So what was he doing every two weeks when he said he was meeting his mother near the school his ex-girlfriend goes to? She knew then she had to do a little researching of her own.
MySpace, what a beautiful contraption. Make-ups, break-ups, divorces, marriages, rumors…all compressed into one site where you speak about yourself and show a picture. Pissed as she was, she went onto his page and scavenged to find that one day after she had broken up with him, he and his ex began dating again. She had a theory that since he always contradicted his words, he may have been a compulsive liar--lying to get himself out of trouble and make him look good. She didn’t want him as a friend on myspace, so to make it less obvious that she was doing a little research of her own, she erased him from her list.
As if on a cue, he instant messaged her on her account on AIM. She winced at the sight of his name, feeling a little annoyance stirring up as he had wrote the words, “what, no friends?”
She couldn’t help but smile as she wanted to make him feel terrible, “Friends? What kind of friend are you? You have ignored me for the past month! Who puts up with that? Go be happy with your ex--oh wait, she’s your girlfriend now isn’t she?”
“Its not even like that. Do you think I care for her? I don’t, I love you!”
“Oh, you are digging yourself deep and you don’t even know it. So you’re with her and you don’t even love or like her? So what does that say about you? When you were with me, that probably means you did the same thing with me, right?”
“Its not even like that,”
“Don’t play yourself, I’m not down with pitying you anymore,”
And she blocked him. But he still mailed her:
do u really think that I am acting like my self right now do u after how u left me. I am not my self . I don’t even believe myself right now .and yes I did lov... nothing ok fine if u don’t want to hear anything from me that’s fine I understand y . but if I cant have u as a gf please maybe a friend. u no what forget it u don’t want to hear anything from me anymore. soooo I hope u thet best
And she replied:
You're funny. You are so funny. You told me to stop
being so shut and just tell people what’s on my mind. This is where
your advice comes back to bite you in the ass.
I saw you smoking
today. Yeah right: "I only did it once" Bull.
And you
don’t even love your girlfriend now? What the hell is that shit?
That is not fair to her. Did you think you could use her to make me
jealous or something? Well, sorry, too bad, it's not working. That
says a lot of shit about you. I thought you were strong because of
the army. Now I see you're just weak and you hide behind it. And if
you treat your friends the way you were treating me for the past
month, I don't know who the hell puts up with that. Whatever. Fool me
once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. I will not be
fooled again. Nothing you can say will make me think you're telling
the truth. You lost a good person for your own selfish reasons. Don't
try to make yourself look like the victim anymore, because I no
longer take pity on you.
I do pity the fool that believes your
lies, though.
She smiled, being stronger than she was three months ago. She was content with what she had written, somewhat proud that she opened her mouth and spoke. Not wanting to deal with his drama anymore, she went to sleep that night--but of course, it never ends, does it?
Isabelle had to bring in the girlfriend, of course, had to tell her Jay wasn’t really in love with her. As much as she wanted to hurt him, she didn’t want to actually speak with her. She wanted to tell Will to tell Jay’s girlfriend to make him stop calling her. But of course…drama never ends. She did find some interesting facts, though.
The girlfriend told Melanie that he said he didn’t actually love Melanie at all, that all he thought about was her, her, her. At first Melanie wanted to help the girl, and she went far enough to tell her what he has said and show her the e-mails, but further investigation showed that she was actually messing with some other guy. Why help? She cheated on Jay before anyway. Plus she falls for his lines. Just like Melanie did. No helping, because when you try to help someone, it always backfires. Jay’s girlfriend told him everything, and the next day at school he yelled at both Isabelle and Antony.
Melanie just smiled triumphantly. What’s done is done. She may regret him only a little bit, but she doesn’t regret the strength she gained from the experience. Now to get everyone to stop mentioning him so it could be as if he dropped off the face of the earth…
