Middle school

never wanted me.

I never understood

what “going out” meant, or how it worked.

(Of course, that was because

I was never involved in anything like that.)

The constant drama

that enveloped

all of the other members

of my gender

confused me.

(Who cares

about a stupid boy?

It’s not like you were going

to marry him, anyway.

You’re in 7th grade,

for goodness’ sake.)

The instant messaging craze

never registered in my mind.

(Whatever happened

to talking on the phone?)

The only thing I did have in common

with everyone else

was the desire to be noticed.

My shy aura and uncool ways

kept popularity from finding me, however.

Longing to fit in,

but just never understanding what

it was all about…

Middle school

never wanted me.

(And now high school doesn’t, either.)
