Fallen

Chapter 1:

A man walked into the harsh winds and bitterly cold weather as he tugged his collar closer to his mouth, covering his rosy, cold cheeks. It was the middle of winter and he was just walking home from what he called, his “job”.

Gazing out into the vast emptiness with only tall buildings that looked nothing like skyscrapers in the dark, he noticed something on the ground. Crouching, he sat on the snow. Trailing his fingers across the cold ground, he picked up the object and examined it.

It was a pure white feather. Not like those feathers that a swan had – gah! What was he thinking? There were no swans here in Cornwall! Other than the ones at the zoo, of course, but still, there weren’t any…

His mind wandered off the feather for a few moments before another harsh wind nearly blew him off his feet. He stood his ground for a few moments before it stopped again.

He looked down at the feather. It was so soft, he thought to himself. He bent down and looked closer to the ground.

He froze.

There were droplets of blood inked into the white snow.

--

His eyes widened and he looked further. There was a trail of blood, leading somewhere, along with footprints and a couple of white feathers here and there.

And he did what a normal person would do.

He followed the trail. The trail of blood, feathers and footprints had led him to an empty and dark alley. Being a curious human, he peered and looked around the alleyway. Even in the dark, he could tell what he saw next was not human.

Perhaps it was those beautiful, but damaged white feathery wings on her back or the angelic face of this woman or even the glow she emitted while laying there, still as a statue, but he had already fallen for her…

He started to panic.

His eyes widened even more, his hands clenched into a fist, and he started to pace. He walked in circles, imprinting the fresh white snow with his own footprints. “Oh god, oh god…” he muttered in a panicked tone of voice. “What…am I to do…?” he asked himself.

A groan was heard from the angelic woman.

He turned to look at her. With newfound determination, he walked up to her and kneeled beside her. Without realizing it, he began to soothe her. He brushed her plain brown hair out her closed eyelids.

The angelic woman soon began to relax.

A smile graced the woman’s features as she slept in the cold alley, along with the man, but the man didn’t notice. Soon, the singing became humming and soon that too had fallen silent, for the man had fallen asleep.

But the woman did not.

She carefully whispered, “Thank you,” and her world was overtook by exhaustion and pain.
