Mind Games
By Irony Illuminator
Chapter One: Metaphors
She crossed the room in long, determined strides. This had gone on long enough. It was time to put a stop to the madness, (as cliché as it sounded) an end to the chaos.
Finish it, finish it. End it, end it.
The words echoed through her mind, constant repetition.
Her gun was suddenly in her left hand, although she couldn’t recall having put it there. The door was right there in front of her and her right hand was reaching for the handle. Her grip on the gun tightened slightly.
She was going to end it.
Now.
It didn’t matter what she saw inside that room. It would have no effect on her resolution. She was not going to fail in this.
The door flew open, jerking the knob from her grasp. She took a step into the room and stopped.
There was a boy standing in the room, in the center of the floor. His arms hung loosely at his sides. He had dark brown hair, long and straight, so that it fell past his jaw. His eyes were large and green, but blank. Purposely blank, she saw. Blank because of her. Or maybe they were blank for her.
The boy looked at her. Blank. “Who are you?”
She blinked. He didn’t know who she was? No, that was impossible. He was toying with her mind.
Don’t listen to him, Jazmynn. Don’t listen to him. Pull the trigger, Jazmynn. PULL THE DANG TRIGGER! But her brain wasn't sending the appropriate messages to her hand, apparently. Her finger didn’t move and therefore the trigger wasn’t pulled.
“What are you doing here?” He cocked his head to one side with an expression that bordered on curiosity.
Jazmynn licked her lips. What was she doing here? Who was she? She suddenly became aware of the gun she was holding. Oh, that’s right. Now she could remember.
“My name is Jazmynn,” she said evenly.
“What are you doing here?” he repeated.
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “Tell me.” Pull the trigger. “They tell me you know all the answers. You tell me what I’m doing here.” Pull the trigger, Jazmynn. “Well? I thought you were more intelligent than that! Don’t you know what I’m doing here?” Pull the trigger now, before you fail them all.
“Oh, I know what you’re doing here. I just don’t think you do,” he said airily.
Jazmynn had the sinking feeling that she had just jumped off a cliff without any means of landing in one piece. And not just metaphorically.
