Collection of Memoirs

I remember countless summers
Spent just lazing on the beach.
We could swim into deep waters
Though always stay within arms’ reach.

I remember drawing pictures
At the relentless age of nine.
We could finger paint for hours
Quite unaware of the lack of time.

I remember secret-telling
And staying up ‘till late at night.
And together we’d watch horrors
That had us sleep with a nightlight.

I remember holding you close
And knowing everything’s okay.
Knowing no matter what would happen
My best friend you’d always stay.

I remember how you moved
And how you held your head so high.
I remember your reassuring voice
And your deep, beautiful, green eyes.

I remember your sleek hair
That I envied since the start.
I recall embracing you
And feeling the beat of your soft heart.

I remember when your body
Was lit up into great flames.
I remember seeing you burn
And knowing it would never be the same.

I remember seeing ashes
As my only remains of you.
And I do now just remember
That with you I had died, too.
