My Brown Eyed Girl

Ch.1-leaving

I sat by my window and waited. Streams of rain graced my window. It streamed down the window pane blurring my vision from the quiet street. I was covered by a quilt my grandmother had made. It kept me warm. Made me feel safe. My brown eyes swept over the street again in search of something. More like someone. I grew nervous as the clock shone 2:45.

‘He’s fifteen minutes late’ I thought to myself.

I looked around my room. The light purple wall coloring made it seem peaceful and fun loving. Flower patterns spread across my comforter on my bed. I was only 11. Ready to go into the sixth grade. Without my best friend.

Yeah, that’s who I was waiting for. My best friend, he was moving. To New York. Across the country. Away from me. I had known him since I had been 1. Our parents were close. I told myself to be strong. That, maybe, he wasn’t moving.

But when I saw the large moving followed by his mother’s green Honda, my heart shrank and shriveled.

I heard the door open slightly, but I didn’t turn my head.

“Faye? Dominic’s here.” She said hesitantly.

My heart started to hurt more at the sound of his name. I heard her hesitate. She was deciding whether or not to come over to me. She finally just decided to shut the door.

I got up almost immediately and ran to the front door, swinging it open. He stood there head down showing only his raven black hair. It was spiked up. When he heard the door open he looked up slowly at me. His beautiful light blue eyes were filled with so many emotions. I looked over at his mom’s car. She was sitting inside looking over at us with a sad look on her face. The new job she was offered was just too good to pass up. I can understand that I guess. His family needs the money since it’s just him and her.

“Faye…I just…came by to give you this and tell you I’m sorry I’m leaving.” He told me calmly.

My throat tightened and I shook my head.

“Don’t be.” Was all I said.

He handed me a small box wrapped in purple tissue paper. He inched closer to me and leaned over to whisper in my ear.

“I love you. I always have. I just could never tell you.” With that he leaned back a bit and kissed me softly on the lips. It was short, but sweet.

“I love you. My brown eyed girl” he whispered in my ear.

I was too shocked to say anything. I wouldn’t have been able to anyways because he turned around and bolted through the rain to the car that awaited him.

I watched as the car sped off with the moving van. The rain fell so hard that day. My brown eyes swelled up with fake rain.

‘Even though I close my eyes

Inside it still rains.’

6 years later:

“Faith Lane?” My teacher called out my name for roll call.

“Faith Lane? Has anyone seen Faith?” he asked again.

Meanwhile:

“I’m late. I’m late!” I told my self as I ran down the hallways of Springhill High School.

‘This is what I get for playing that prank on my mom this morning.’ I thought finally seeing my class room door.

I ran faster towards it and swung it open.

“I’M HERE!” I yelled throwing my hands up. Just as I did the bell rang. For some reason my teacher always liked to take roll before class started.

Mr. Evans gave me stern look for my outburst.

I heard snickers from the class as I smiled innocently at him.

“Take your seat Faye.” He instructed.

“Thank you sir!” I bowed, letting my dark brown hair fall to the floor.

I heard a couple of laughs as I rose and strutted to my seat, but not before seeing my teacher smile. He was always a fun teacher. No matter how hard he tried to keep a straight face, he couldn’t. He had graying hair and laugh lines from years of smiling and laughing. His deep blue eyes shone every time someone actually got something right. Ah, English was great with Mr. Evans.

“Now that that’s done with” he announced as I took my seat and smiled innocently, “Let’s start the exam.”

“FREEDOM!” I yelled throwing my hands up in the air as I walked out of the building among many other people.

“But we still come back on Tuesday.” Some behind me announced pleasantly.

I turned around quickly to find my best friend Shane behind me. He had on a lopsided grin and looked at me with pleasant green eyes.

“Shut up. I don’t want to think about that right now. It’s Friday!” I yelled closing my eyes and breathing in deeply. I hugged myself and stood there doing nothing.

“Ok well, while you’re hugging yourself I’m going to meet Hailey. Bye!” he yelled. I hadn’t even realized he was walking away.

“Crap! I forgot about that!” I yelled running to my car.

“Race you there?!” he yelled from his car.

“You got it babe!” I yelled back getting in and starting it up.

I sped off with the windows down and music blaring. Shane wasn’t that far behind me. In fact he was right behind me. Tail gating me. I didn’t let it bother me though. I came to a stop light and closed my eyes listening to Everything I’m Not by The Veronicas. I sang along with it while my arms flailed wildly out the window earning me weird looks. With my dark brown hair streaked Crimson and weird style, I was quite a show.

I pulled into a parking space next to a mini van filled with kids. I danced and sang along with the last part of the song (which I played continuously throughout the trip). When it was finally over I got out and looked over at the van. All the kids were staring at me. I just laughed and walked on in.

Looking around I finally spotted black hair streaked purple. I ran over and jumped on Hailey.

We both toppled over to the floor while Shane just stood there laughing.

“I’m okay! It’s okay! Something broke my fall!” I laughed putting my arms out. I’m very enthusiastic.

“Yeah, me” Hail said rubbing her back while standing up.

I smiled innocently and looked at her. Her black hair had streaks of dark purple and was thrown up into a weird style. Black eye liner outlined her beautiful violet eyes (which were rare, and real). She wore black jeans and a ripped dark purple tank top. Shane on the other hand was more down to earth and not as eccentric. He was on the football team, but his blonde shaggy hair did contain streaks of green in them. Courtesy of Hail and I. You never fall asleep before us or something is more than likely to happen to you. Turns out he liked it so he kept it. His green eyes matched so it was good. His style was more skater meets prep. It’s weird. BUT! I love them both. They’ve been my best friends since the 7th grade.

We started to walk around.

“So how’s Jeremy?” Hailey asked quizzically.

“I broke up with him” I shrugged my shoulders and walked into Spencers.

“What? I thought this one was actually going to last!” Shane exclaimed.

“What was it this time?” Hail asked looking at a playboy bunny tank top.

“He just didn’t interest me anymore.”

Ever since I lost weight in 9th grade, I went through a boy phase. A lot of guys asked me out and I said yes. The only lasted maybe a month if they were lucky. Going into 10th grade though I became less interested and dated less. Jeremy actually out lasted all the others with a great 3 months. That’s just it though. 3 months was all he could keep my attention for. No I’m not a whore.

“You whore.” Hailey joked as she paid for a skirt and we left.

“Ha! At least I get paid more than you!” I smiled.

“Only by 10 cents!” she pouted and crossed her arms.

We just laughed. It was a little joke between us.

“I feel like dancing!” I proclaimed as I heard Hellogoodbye’s Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn.

I ran in front of them and started to dance. People stared at me like I was crazy. Although some people cat called.

“Swear that I’m not kidding!

Night time is so pretty!” I sang emphasizing on the moves I made.

Hailey laughed and so did Shane. I did a little turn shaking my butt as I did. I smirked and winked at a nearby guy. He smiled back at me. My hair flew up as I danced more. I began going backwards. I smiled at my friends as I kept dancing backwards, that is, until I hit a hard chest. I turned around immediately putting my hand over my mouth. I looked up to see a guy with shaggy black hair that fell in his dark blue eyes.

“I’m sorry.” I tried not to laugh.

He smiled. “No problem”

I saw his eyes travel down to my neck. I looked down to my necklace. I touched it on reflex.

Flashback:

I walked inside after he left. My mom came in from the kitchen, drying her hands on a towel.

What did he give you Faye?” she asked looking at the box in my hand.

I looked down at it. Finally realizing it was there. I hesitated, but soon found myself unwrapping the tissue. Inside was a blue velvet box. I opened it slowly. A crimson red rose necklace was place perfectly in the middle. Red crystals lined the inside of the rose while one lonely ruby was in the middle. The chain was black. It was beautiful.

End

I haven’t taken it off since that day. It was just normal for me to have it on, but I never forgot about it.

“Cute necklace.” He said reaching out and touching it softly. For some reason I let him. I never let anyone touch it. Not even Shane or Hailey.

“Thank you” I whispered.

“I guess I better go. Maybe I’ll see you around.” He walked to my side and leaned over to my ear “My brown eyed girl” he whispered.

My eyes grew wide and I just stood there. I froze in time. By the time I realized what he said and turned around. He was long gone.

“Hey you okay?” Shane asked a little worried.

“Yeah, just thought I saw a ghost.” I smiled weakly.

“What?” Hailey said confused.

I shook my head. “Nothing, I’ll tell you later.” I smiled softly and looked around.

“Ohh! Hot Topic! Let’s go!” I yelled pulling my two best friends towards the store.

They both looked at me in disbelief as they obliged. My heart still raced. I kept looking around paranoid. Had I dreamt it? I think not.
