Ch.2-I wouldn't call me sane either.
“So are you going to tell us what that was about back there?” Shane asked with interest.
I froze and quickly looked around for a distraction.
“Hey don’t you guys want ice cream?! I’ll buy.” I said quickly starting to walk over to it, but I felt a hand hold me back.
“Faye, now you’re just scaring me.” Concern playing in his voice.
He let go of my arm and I dropped my head. I had never told them about Dominic before. I just kept that to myself. Never wanting to remember such a sweet memory that tore me to pieces. I examined my necklace. Tracing my fingers over the flower. I heard my name and looked up to see my two best friends looking at me intently. I sighed and sat down on the nearest bench.
“He was my first love…” I told them straight out what happened and how I thought I was just dreaming when he told me that.
“Do you think it was actually him?” Hailey asked after I was through.
I sighed and rested my head on my hands. I ran my fingers through my hair and left them tangled up in it.
“I don’t know. You know I hallucinate every so often so I can’t be sure. It could just be a coincidence and some random guy just thought my eyes and necklace was nice.” I said bluntly.
“Let’s forget about it okay? I don’t want to think right now.” I smiled weakly.
They both knew not to push when I was frustrated and nodded.
“You still up to buying us ice cream?” Shane smirked.
“What ever lover boy. You lost your chance!” I laughed.
“WHAT?! Nuh uh! You are going to buy us ice cream!” he yelled and jumped up. He had this murderous/amused look on his face.
My mouth shaped into an O and I jumped up and sprinted to the door. I could hear both of them laughing and chasing after me. I found my car and jumped in. I cracked the window and locked the doors as they came up to it. They pressed their faces up against my window laughing and making faces. I laughed and scrunched up my nose at the thought of the smudges they were leaving. I stuck out my tongue and unlocked the door and relocked it a couple times.
“Hey follow me!” I said through the windows.
“My car’s in the shop!” Hailey yelled through the window.
I unlocked the door and let her in. She hopped into the passenger side and we waited for Shane to get into his car before taking off. He followed closely as I pulled into Braums. Our favorite ice cream place!
We all sat down at a table after we got our ice cream. It was silent for a minute.
“Was he your first love?” Shane asked glancing up from his ice cream.
I stopped.
“Yeah, he really was. I just didn’t realize it at the time. If he hadn’t of told me I would have never known the way he felt. Weird you can find love at 11.” I smiled.
“Those were both painful and good memories.” I smiled lightly, but my eyes held something different.
“Dominic huh?” Hailey said licking her ice cream.
I smiled and nodded.
She smiled too.
“I think he’ll come back for you. If it was really him.” She reassured me.
“Why get my hopes up? Just to have them shattered again?” I asked more myself than her.
“Because you won’t stop having hope and you know he will” she smiled back.
I knew she was right. That’s why I never stopped smiling the whole day.
----------------------------------------- next day----------------------------------------------
I didn’t see the mystery guy again that day, but I didn’t lose any sleep over it. I had been hoping for 6 years. Now, when I have almost given up and forgotten. It haunts me again. I sighed and threw the covers off unable to sleep anymore. It was around 11 in the afternoon and I needed a nice jog. I stripped off my PJs and put on my workout sweats and a white tank top. Slipping on my running shoes I jogged down the stairs.
“Faye? Is that you?” My dad called from his study.
I walked into his study seeing him reading a newspaper at his desk. My parents had divorced when I was in 8th grade. I hadn’t even known they were fighting. Ever since then my dad moved out and bought a house a couple of streets down so he could be close to me and my little brother Hayden. We really switched houses a lot. Sunday through Wednesday I was at my mom’s and Wednesday through Sunday I was with my dad. My little brother mostly stayed with my mom since she had custody but seeing as I was 17 I was able to go back and forth.
“Can you drop off and pick up Hayden at soccer practice? It would really mean a lot to me sweetie.” He asked giving me his puppy dog eyes. I hate it when he does that. He knows I’ll give in.
So much for a jog.
“Yeah” I said reluctantly.
“Great! It’s in 15 minutes so get a move on and pick him up around 12:30 or so. Thanks!” he smiled lightly and went back to reading. I grunted and walked out of his office.
“HAYDEN!” I yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
I soon heard footsteps and saw his little feet run down the stairs. He was already dressed and ready to go. His blonde hair and light blue eyes light up as he smiled.
“Ready to go kiddo?” I asked as he made his way down the last step.
He nodded vigorously and followed me out to my car. He was only six but he still had an attitude of a 9 year old. Which is funny. He once cussed at some old lady and immediately my parents looked at me. I raised my hands in defense. I didn’t do it. Hopefully.
He strapped himself in and waited to be dropped off.
As I pulled up to his field and saw his coach. I leaned over and kissed him on the top of his head.
“I’ll be back and 12:30 to pick you up. Be looking for me and stay close to your coach or friends. Don’t go wondering off.” I told him lightly.
“Okay Faye!” he smiled innocently.
I smiled to and waved him off. I watched as he ran over to his coach and team. His little green jersey flying behind him because it was a little too big. I love my brother.
I drove over to a nearby park and decided to jog here. Not too far away. My brown hair was tied back and I stretched before I started.
After a while I collapse on a patch of luscious green grass. I leaned back onto my elbows and closed my eyes letting my head drop backwards. I breathed in the air and let it out slowly. Sometimes it’s good to live in the moment. Green trees let only a small amount of sunlight as they were blowing carelessly in the wind. I smiled too myself and looked up. I saw a glimpse of what I thought was a guy. He was walking into a little path in the woods. He looked really familiar. Then it hit me. The guy from the other day.
I got up immediately and started to walk after him. I soon went into the woods looking around. I looked around paranoid. What if it wasn’t him and some creep who wants to abduct you? Play dead! No um fall limp! Yeah!
I was thinking all of this as I came to a small creek in the middle of the woods.
“Dominic?” I nervously called out.
‘This place looks familiar.’ I thought going over to a large rock I saw and sitting on it.
I looked around at the small creek. Pulling my knees up to my chest and hugging them, I started to think of where I could have seen this place before. Then I remembered.
Flashback:
“Where did you find this place?” 9 year old Faye asked 10 year old Dominic.
“I don’t know. I was just walking through the woods and found it.” He explained.
They were both sitting up on a large rock that over looked the whole creek. Faye was so amazed she didn’t speak for a while. The water ran so smoothly and the lighting was perfect. Not too little but not too much. She smiled and moved her hand a little to readjust. She felt something as she did. She looked down and saw her hand landed on top of his. She pulled it away quickly and blushed.
“Sorry” she whispered.
She never saw his smile.
End
I pulled out of my dream state and checked my watch.
“CRAP!” I yelled realizing it was 1.
I jumped up and ran back through the woods to my car. I pulled out in a hurry almost knocking over a stray trash can.
I never saw him smile, as he watched me leave.
When I arrived I saw my brother sitting down on a soccer ball, his elbows resting on his legs and hands holding his chin. He looked sad and lonely. I pulled up and honked my horn. His coach looked up and he shot me a disappointed look. I got out and walked up to them ringing my hands, as I did when I was nervous or embarrassed.
“I’m so sorry.” I bent down to my little brother and hugged him.
“I am really extremely immensely sorry.” I babbled hugging him tighter.
He forgave people easy and hugged me back, but I could still feel the tension. He was sad. I pulled back and looked back. I ran my hands through his thin blonde hair and gave him a weak smile.
“Faye can I talk to a moment?” his coach asked me quietly.
I nodded and told Hayden to wait in the car.
“Lock the doors!” I called after him.
I looked back over to Ben, his coach. He had strong features and thick black hair. Grey eyes looked at me softly. He was about 20. His love for kids had him striving to get his degree to be a teacher. For now he settled on soccer coach. His disappointed look made me feel guilty. Under his watch I wrung my hands more.
“It’s unlike you to be late.” He said lightly.
“I was caught up in something. Lost track of time.” I whispered looking down. He made me feel like I was 2 again.
He lifted up my chin with his hand. “Don’t be late again. That kid loves you. You’re the only thing close to sane he has. I wouldn’t even call you that.” He smiled lightly. His gorgeous grey eyes lighting up. I smiled to. Ben and I tried the dating scene but it didn’t work out. So we stayed friends. I could still tell he had feelings though.
“So! What are you doing tonight?” he asked casually walking me to my car.
“Well I don’t know Mr. Logan what are you implying?” I asked smiling playfully.
He laughed as I leaned up against my door.
“Well,” he started as he leaned in closer “ I was thinking you and me could go to dinner”
“Just as friends?” I smiled.
“Just as friends.” He reassured me, but I saw the look where he wanted it to be more.
“Okay.” I laughed.
“Great. I’ll pick you up around 8.” He leaned in and kissed me lightly on the cheek.
I got in the car and waved. The trip home was silent. I looked over at my brother. He had fallen asleep ‘you’re the closets thing to sane he has’
Those thoughts filled my head. After the divorce, my mom and dad weren’t the same. They both worked late hours. Which I didn’t complain much because it brought in more money. But I was left to care for Hayden when he was only 2. That’s why I was so careful with him. Soon, though, my mother and father realized their mistake a couple years later and sought out to fix it. We still do things together still. I smiled as I heard his restless breathing of trying to get comfortable.
“I wouldn’t call me sane either” I silently agreed with Ben. What a loser. I laughed.
