An empty glass
stands washed on the muddy banks
of the marsh on the highway.
The sun's rays are reflected from the rim,
briefly caught in the eye of the passerby.
What was once contained within its walls
is left forgotten on the roadside.
A weary gull perches on the artificial surface
and preens its wings.
Leaping off, silt seeps within the container.
Gently, it soundlessly hits the bottom
and spins to its side.
Forgotten, it's engulfed by its surroundings
