My Guardian Angel

In the dark.

I lie awake, in the dark.
Fears surround me, I cannot escape.
Fear claws at my insides, squeezing me; I cannot breathe.

Nightmares take me, I cannot escape.
Clawing screaming, grabbing.
My mind unsettled.

In the dark I am swallowed by shadows.

In the dark, lurks my haunting mind.

Something grabs me, I try to scream.
I cannot breathe. I have no voice.
No escape, no way out.

I awake, cold, shivering, sweat.
Hearing the rattle of wind against the pane.
Hear it whistling through the trees; howling.
Calling my name.

I cry, shivering. Alone.

Someone whispers my name.
A voice I have heard before . . . in my dreams.
I find myself looking into dark eyes.
Gentle, loving.

I am afraid.

He tells me it is all right. Not to cry.
It is all over just a memory.
A dream.

What are you?

I recognize him from . . . somewhere.
He holds me close as I cry.
Perhaps I am still dreaming?

Is this real?

He wipes away the last of my tears, tells me not to be scared.
For he is always there, my guardian angel, watching over me.
Go back to sleep. No dreams.

I awake. Finally. Reality.
I am alone; no one there.

It was just a dream?

I lay down. Peaceful silence.
Calming. I sleep.

My Guardian Angel . . .

He smiles, unnoticed; outside the window.
Whispers of goodbye, he leaves.
My Guardian Angel disappearing into the darkness . . .
