Ch. 2-

It’s weird how sometimes you don’t really miss someone until you realize they’re really gone. That’s how I was anyways, that night, after Cole died. It’s like when someone’s in the hospital…they’re still there. But when they die, they’re not there anymore.

It didn’t hit me until that night, that he was really gone. I’d had the worst dream, a nightmare to say the least. And usually I’d knock on the wall that separated our rooms. He’d answer with a knock of his own and then we’d talk through the wall. And the same when that happened to him. But I knocked…and he didn’t knock back.

I needed to hear his voice. I needed him to tell me that everything was OK. Even when he’d been at the hospital, I’d call him or he’d call me. But now…there was no one to call.

I crept out of bed and slunk across my hard wood floor and out into the hall and into the next room, Cole’s room. His room was clean, yet a mess. At least it still looked like he lived there. I climbed into his bed and pulled the blanket over my head. It still smelled like him.

We live out in the country, my mom never liked the city. ‘Too big, too crowded.’ So we always lived out in ‘the sticks’ as my dad calls it. I like it though. It’s so peaceful and always so quiet. Cole and I used to play out in the yard all the time. As we grew older we discovered that we especially liked to play in the pasture because it was so secluded and quiet. Mom’d wanted to get animals for the farm, but it cost too much. We did have a dog though, Sis. I named her that because I’d never had a sister. Cole got really offended. It didn’t last long though, he learned to love her. Just like me.

Daddy used to tease us and say the farm was haunted. I once asked him if that was because Dyl’s grave was outside. He didn’t tease us again.

I could hear Cole whispering in my ear.

“It’s ok, Ada…everything’s ok.”

“What do you know?” I whispered back.

“Everything..” His whisper answered me.

“You’re not even here! How could you know?” He didn’t answer that time. I threw the blanket off and sat up. Silence. No one was there. No one.
