Hidden and forlorn,

she hides behind her mask,

perpetually the imposter

of a distant soul of the past.

Now her smile trembles,

her cheeks are all too weak -

to carry such a burden!

and allowing none to breach

And her heart sinks every time

that reminder of what once was walks by -

and though she inaudibly whimpers,

her disguise does not release a sigh.

She watches from her window,

the transfixed eyes too passive to read.

in that unblinking stare,

it's impossible to guess what she perceives

The merry demeanor of her face -

what a misconception of the eyes!

a simulacrum of happiness -

the truth never recognized.
