Relativity
By Kaitlyn Grissom
A ray of light fell on your hand.
Between the blinds, a yellow band
Of dancing dust came slanting in
From wide blue heaven, born within
Some distant sun in flaring fire.
I wonder, did it ever tire
Of streaking ‘cross the universe?
I wonder, did it ever curse
The day that it was forged and flung
Into the Black of space, unsung?
And I don’t know if it enjoyed
Its journey through the empty void
Or if it would have rather cast
Itself upon a worthier last
Reflection, on some rolling sphere,
Or heav’nly sight, and did it fear
That after its long, desperate crawl
O’er countless leagues, that it may fall
Upon a fool like you or me,
But Oh! It was a sight to see
When, shifting in the icy air,
I first perceived it lying there.
And in its bright simplicity,
It perfectly explained to me
The circle of eternity,
And that is relativity.
