From across the ornately-furnished, golden room, she saw Him. He was looking at her with piercingly clear blue eyes, beautifully sculpted lips set in a grim line. He wore the face of a peacock upon his own, the feathers rising from him like wings unfurling from an angel’s back. Carefully, she approached him, and reached up tentatively, caressing the soft down of the mask. Then, in an instant, she ripped it off.

He had no face.
