We Were Like Sisters

I look to you,

My friend,

For you to take my hand

And lead me out of here.

Don’t leave me alone.

You said you never would.

How easily words can be forgotten.

For years we knew each other,

And stayed by each other’s side.

But we were torn apart.

You were taken from me

By circumstance.

I miss you,

And wish you’d come back

To remind me of the past

When everything was so simple

And we had no worries at all.

But I know you’ll never come back,

And we are unable to return

To the lives we once led.

Forever I will cherish the bond we had.

And if ever I see you on the street,

I’ll smile,

And remember that once

We were like sisters.

But now we are women,

And are finding our way in the world.

I hope you’ll smile too,

And not be unhappy

By the loss of our friendship,

But find joy

In how we affected each other

To be better people.

I will never forget

The impact you had on my life.

And even though our plans

For the future and beyond

Will never come to be,

I’ll be glad I was lucky enough

To be graced by your friendship.

And know that in some way

I’ve brought joy to your life.

Let’s always remember what we had,

And not mourn for what could’ve been.
