Dr. Superhero, D.V.M.

He’s not as fast as the speeding bullet flies,
But his wit is lightning-quick.
And when it comes to X-ray vision,
He can’t see through walls--
But those pinpoint-sharp irises of gilded golden green
Have honed their vision over decades
So he’ll never miss a beat.

He can’t leap the Empire State Building
Nor soar above the highest clouds,
But I myself have seen him fly--
Springing headfirst into action
At the very first sign of peril;
Saving damsels and answering duty’s call
All in a ten-hour shift.

My superhero wields no super powers--
No laser-vision, no anti-gravity cloak.
His foes are invisible to the naked eye--
Dastardly super-villains with foreign names:
Parvo, Bordatella, Ascaridata.
Day after day after day, he’ll save the world again
His work is never done.

My superhero is no masked marvel--
Just an ordinary man.
But his strength is superhuman;
He knows no Kryptonite.
His cape is a navy scrub smock bearing the letters “D.V.M.”
And while he’s known by all as Dr. Rudy C.,
I prefer to call him Superman.
