THE SCARY STORY

You would think this to be your typical scary story but it is not. Ironically, this story does start out when it is cold and dark. The moon is high, big and it shines bright.

I’m your typical neighborhood boy. I stand five feet five and a half inches and weigh one hundred and ten pounds and I am thirteen years old. I live in Fort Polk, Louisiana.

POP! I jumped at the noise and my eyes turned back to the fire. I shook my head and threw another stick into the fire. This was my first night out and I guess you could say I’m on the run…

I’m on the school bus riding to my school, Leesville Jr. High School. I’m looking out the window and I see the school. We pass it and about fifty feet later we turn right in to Leesville High School. My brother and half the others get off. The bus door creaks to a close and the bus moves on. It turns left and stops. The bus driver looks both ways and turns left again. I sit up and grab my bag. I look past my best friend Dustin and I see the ditch and the small little bridge. The bus stops and I stand. I walk stiffly down the aisle and off the bus. I stop and wait for my friend.

“I hate this!” I said trying to sag my tan Dockers. I try to pull my white collared shirt out a little bit.

“Welcome to the eighth grade,” Dustin said.

“At least you can breathe down there. I” can’t! My stupid pants are too tight.” We walked inside the school.

“Remember, kids,” Dustin said in a mocking tone, “you must be outside before school and during lunch.” Dustin shakes his head.

“And you can’t bring your book bags in class and you are allowed to go to your lockers every two hours. And bring your book bags in class with you in seventh hour ‘cause you are not allowed to go to your lockers after school.” Dustin and I shook our heads as we walked straight. To our right would be the student service and around the corner from that is the seventh grade hall. Dustin stops at his locker and I go up the four steps and I pass a classroom and there are a set of lockers. I’m on the bottom. I take out everything I need for two hours and I put my bag into my locker. I get up and wait for Dustin so we can go outside. I try to sag my pants a little bit more. Don’t worry its only tight in the mid section and loose around my legs.

“Dude, where did you get those?” Dustin said pushing up his glasses.

“The P.X.”

“Ah. No wonder.”

I looked at him quizzically.

“What do you mean?”

“You are not supposed to go there!”

I mouthed the word “oh”. A teacher walks past us and looks at us.

“You boys need to go outside.” She said. I looked behind me and looked at her. There was boy who was walking up the “flight” of stairs and the teacher stops him.

“You are missing your belt. Come with me to the office.” The boy bows his head and follows the teacher.

“Man, that’s harsh.” I said. We turned and started up the second set of four steps and then walked outside. I felt the cool crisp air against my face. We hung out against the wall next to the door.

“Remember last year, you ran into the bathroom and slipped? And you slid and you broke the second stall’s door. And you landed on the floor with a big bang,” Dustin paused to laugh. I had a smile on my face. That was pretty funny. “Then…then… the side of your pants was wet. Your elbow had a nasty multi-colored bruise on it. Your shin also had a bruise on it. But it wasn’t multi-colored.” Dustin burst out laughing. I was laughing also. That really did hurt. But like always, I got up laughing.

“Yeah, I remember that. I showed Tammy that multi-colored bruise and she thought it was disgusting. And I remember looking into the stall and it having the caution wet floor sign. Someone moved it. Man, that stall was broken before. I guess I broke it again. Yeah, remember also that to avoid going outside we would hang out in the bathroom during lunch?” Dustin nodded his head. A big grin was on his face.

“Yeah, dude! She, the janitor that stood in the hallway to make sure we went outside, went into the bathroom wile we was both using the urinals!” A new wave of laughter engulfed Dustin. I couldn’t help myself this time. I burst out laughing also.

“Man, that’s was some funny stuff. Then when it was raining we had to go inside the stupid gym and the bathrooms were even more crowded.” I ran a hand through my hair.

“Anyway, I heard we got a new principal, this year.” Dustin said calmly. His face was red from laughing so hard.

“Yeah. I hope he changed the lunch room thingy.”

“What do you mean?”

“Remember they would call our classes out and they would line them either on the right side or the left side. You couldn’t cut the person in front of you. You had to set next to the person you were next in line. You couldn’t talk at all.” Dustin made a disgusted face.

“Yeah I remember that.”

“Well, we use to eat lunch first now we eat lunch last.”

“Why did they block English? I mean, I don’t get it. Why not block math also? Why not block P.E.”

“Because P.E. is fun. You can’t have fun at this school remember?”

“Ah, right you are.” The bell rang and we filed into our first hour classes. Mine was English. Yup first two hours of the day was English. It seemed to last forever.

Lunch finally came around. Turns out they did change the lunch room rules and I finally got to sit next to my buddies. It was me, Dustin and my other best friend. He was Asian and we all called him Jackie Chan.

3:15!! Yes! It finally came! We rushed to the buses only to find that my bus wasn’t there. I turned and walked over to the group who rode my bus. I sat down the case for my saxophone on the ground. Dustin walked over to me. I un-tucked my shirt and felt a little bit more comfortable.

“I guess our bus is in the second wave of busses.” Oh yeah, right! We had to stay at the school until 3:30. Sometimes 3:45. I think our bus driver did that on purpose. I really don’t think he likes us very much. Usually, we didn’t get home until 4:15 or 4:30 or so.

The bus stopped at the bus stop and me, my bro, and four other kids walked off. My brother and I took a left and walked to our house. It wasn’t that far from the bus stop. Only about 35 yard walk. There was something strange about this day though. I looked up and there were grey clouds in the sky. Dark, grey clouds, clouds that threaten rain. But there was no worry there. I mean it was hurricane season. I stopped in my neighbor’s lawn. My eyes scanned my yard. There was something fishy about it. Something was added. Something was not right here.

Kevin stood next to me. His eyes scanned the yard also.

“Do you see it?” Kevin put his chin in his hand.

“Nope.” Minutes passed.

“The word is at the tip of my tongue.” Kevin looked down at his ice cream cone and then back at me. He tossed it over his shoulder. It landed in a bee’s nest. The bees rose in a swarm and saw Kevin.

“What are we looking for?” I slapped my head and shook my head at Kevin’s question. The bees attacked Kevin. Kevin let out a blood curdling scream and ran around the yard.

“Kevin! We are looking at our yard! We are looking at the yard to see what is so…so…so…so…grrr! I can’t think of the word.” I sat there tapping my foot. In the background, Kevin is running and screaming in the middle of the street. The bees are really swarming him. “Uhh…strange maybe? Out of place…Well, don’t just stand there, Kevin! Help me figure out a synonym for odd.” I still hadn’t moved my eyes from the yard. “I got it! There is a car there! A car that is foreign, alien. A creature of my front yard! I have never seen a car like that in these parts of the neighborhood. We must investigate! Let’s go Kevin!” I dropped my book bag and ran to the front door. I tried the doorknob. Locked!

“Locked! Then we must really know something’s out of whack!” I ran around to the back door. Locked!

“Once again, my brave brother, the door is locked!” I ran around he yard again. I started pounding on the door.

“Let me in you miserable creeps! This is not your house! Tis house is mine!” Kevin comes up behind me breathing heavily.

“It…the…it is actually the governments. Besides, I got my…house key.”

“Tis that you are smart, dear brother!” Kevin shakily entered the key into the key hole. I opened the door. The key was still in the door. The key is connected to a necklace that is around Kevin’s neck. As I burst through the door, Kevin jerked forward and hit his head on the door. He slumps to the ground.

“Dear, God! Kevin is unconscious! Dear, Kevin, why is it now that you decide to get hurt?! No worries! You just lay there and regain your senses, while I investigate the situation.” I pat Kevin on the head and ran forward. It is dark and creepy in the house. Nothing moves. Rain starts pouring down hard outside. Lighting strikes bright. I run into my room. There on the bed! I scream. But this object is nothing; only my cat.

“Blackie!” I run to her and give her a big hug. She meowed. My cat is pretty big. She looked into my eyes. I looked into hers. Then her eyes shifted and she focused on something behind me. I slowly stood up. It got pitch black. Sweat was running down my face.

“Momma!” I turned around and saw a statuette of a person. I screamed like my brother did when the bees attacked him.

“Don’t scream like that! I’m tired of people screaming like that!” The figure yelled.

“You…You own that car!”

“So! I need something to drive in!”

“What are you doin’ here?!”

“Mind your own business!” I screamed and charged the man. He moved and I caught on what he was trying to do. I turned sharply to my right and ran down the hall then I took a left. I stopped suddenly. The door was opened and there were muddy footprints.

“Dude! My mom is going to kill you!”

“Sorry!” The man called out. I noticed that my brother was gone.

“Where’s my brother?!” I ran outside in the rain. The man followed me. I kept running and running. Soon I found myself in a dark alley way.

“Oops!” I said. I waited for my fate as I saw the man turn the corner. Water dripped down my face. My hair was soaked with water.

“HA! I have you trapped!” The fear within me grew deeper.

“No! You won’t take me alive!”

“You do not know who I am, do you?”

“No!”

“Vince…I am…” I cut him off.

“Don’t you dare say ‘I am your father’. I’ll be force to use drastic measures if you do.” I saw the figure shake his head.

“Fool! That line is what made me become who I am!”

“A father?” My voice was shaking.

“No!”

“Where’s my brother?” I demanded.

“He is in a place where he can’t do harm.”

“Stalker!” I turned and ran but I didn’t go very far. I ran smack into the brick wall. I fell back. I heard the figure walk forward a little.

“Stay where you is!” I said. I thought about that for a minute. “Are!”

“Hark! Where goes thou?”

“It’s halt, you bonehead!”

“Thank you. Anyway, we are getting off the topic.”

I nodded my head. My head hurts. The man started walking towards me. I backed away until my back touched the wet slippery wall. My legs started shaking uncontrollably. I tried to move the wall by pushing on it. Of course that didn’t work. However, it was worth a shot. I heard a noise. I looked down and closed my eyes. I awaited my fate to come and pass already. I looked down and closed my eyes. I awaited my fate to come and pass already. I looked up and I saw a bright light. Wow! I didn’t feel a thing. Man! The movies are bogus! Then I heard the screeching of tires and then I heard the sound of metal against a human body. Then I heard a sickening wet thump.

“Come on!” Kevin screamed from the passenger side of the car. A smile spread over my face and I ran to the car. I got in and the car reversed out of the alley way.

“Hey man,” Dustin said.

“Dude! You don’t have your license yet!” I screamed as he barely hit a car.

“That’s what I said,” Kevin said disapprovingly.

“NOOOOOOO! I’m turning into my brother! Wake me up from this nightmare!”

“Oh come on, Vince, it’s not that bad. Here on the dark side.”

“Why does everyone think they are a character from Star Wars?!” I screamed. The car zoomed down the highway. The road was surrounded by trees. Of course, like in any typical scary movie. I was sitting on the right side in the back. I looked down and saw that the land sloped downward and it was steep.

BAM! I jumped. Kevin screamed a high pitched scream and Dustin swerved a little. I hit my head on the roof and I felt a little trickle of blood. Glass broke and it showered all over me. The flying glass cut my face.

“HA!” I still couldn’t see the figure’s face.

“EEEEEEKKK!” Kevin yelled. Dustin was concentrating on the road.

“Dustin! The dude caught up to us!”

“Duh!” Dustin yelled. He swerved sharply to the left then back to the right. The man still was clinging to the car.

“How fast are we going’?!” Kevin yelled.

“A vicious ten miles an hour!”

“Wow!” The man said. “I can really feel the wind!”

Kevin looked at Dustin, “I’m going to get out and see if I can scare him off.”

“Do it!” Dustin turned up the radio and some opera came on.

“Now we are rockin’!” I yelled as I was trying to control the bleeding on my face.

“Okay! Wish me luck!” Kevin yelled. He opened the door. The blast of the wind made Kevin use some extra strength to keep the door open.

“Dustin, this little scene isn’t accurate.”

“Shut-up! I’m trying to see over the steering wheel!” I looked at him bemused.

“What?!” He looked at me.

“Just kidding.” He turned to face the road. His eyes widened and screamed, “A banana peel!”

Kevin took one step from the speeding car and he stepped on the banana peel and slipped and disappeared. Dustin saw all this in horror.

“NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Now, I must make a dramatic scene. What can it be…YES!” Dustin turned on the automatic steering and turned to me.

“Help! Dustin! He’s going to get me!” Dustin’s eyes shifted and he saw the man struggling to get a full grip on the car.

“Vince, I’m going to jump out of the car!”

“What?! What is that gonna prove?” Dustin thought for a moment.

“Don’t know. But it makes since, doesn’t it. I mean, in the real scary movies don’t they usually do something like this?”

Vince thought for a moment.

“Sometimes,” the man said breathlessly.

“I would have to agree with that.” I said. Dustin slammed his fist into his hand.

“Great! We have a deal. See you in the funny papers!” Dustin opened the door and jumped out. He screamed and disappeared. The man was still trying to get a grip on the car. I looked ahead.

“What to do now?” I thought aloud.

“At least nothing can go worse.”

“Go? You mean ‘get’.”

“Whatever. If I can get into the car then it’ll get worse.” Just then the automatic steering just broke. The car swerved. It ran off the road and we were soaring through the air. The man and I both screamed. The man was holding on for dear life. He screamed louder as a he hit a branch. The man disappeared in a wink of an eye. I screamed. The car hit the ground and started tumbling.

After what seemed like eternity, the car finally stopped. I crawled out and stood up shakily.

“Wow! What a ride.” I heard a thump and someone yelling “Owie.” I shrugged my shoulders and ran.

So, here I am, on the run. The fire was glowing on my face. My eyes appeared darker then normal. My elbows were on my knees and my fingertips were touching each other lightly. I was hunched forward.

I am on the run from a guy I haven’t even seen. For all I know, he could be kid just like me. Or he could be some giant guy who is out to kill me! I shake that thought away. I shook it off not because it was some lame idea. I shook it off because I knew it could be true. Tonight wasn’t your everyday scary tale. Besides, those tales are fictional. They are just tales made up from someone who has a lot of time on their hands. Not me. I am a little chicken nugget. Hmmm…that sounds good. No! Can’t think about food. I must survive. I must run home and warn the others about this human! This creature. I have never seen the likes of his lot in my presence before. I leaned back against a tree. Tomorrow Is another long-

I looked up and saw the sun pop out from the horizon. Wow! Go figure. I blew out my fire and started running. Running where? Not sure yet. But I’m pretty sure I am close to home.

I find a trail and I stop on the edge of it. I look both ways then I step onto it. I see no foot prints or any sign that can tell me if any living creature has crossed this trail. I heard a noise. I turn around. I could not see anything. There! Over to my left I see bushes moving. I scream…I try scream but I fail. I have lost my voice. I ran. But I didn’t get very far as I tripped over a root. I turn on my back as I see the figure e pop out of the bushes and come running up to me. I try crawling backwards. But it is not easy when you are on your back.

I finally see the man. The man is three feet away. He suit on. Oh! A very expensive suit. But now the suit is torn and stained. The man’s face was scratched and bloodied. He smiled at me. I couldn’t move anymore because he was stepping on my shoe lace.

“Rape! Rape!” I yelled. It didn’t work. Fools! Why do they tell me to yell rape when someone is about to kill you/molest you/kidnap you?!

“It won’t work this time, kid! Now that I have you in my grasp…”

“RAPE! RAPE!”

“Shut-up!” I looked at him in sheer horror as he reached in his coat pocket. He pulls out something shiny.

“What is that?!” I blurted.

“A pen.” He pulls something else out and a big grin spreads over his face. “You have won a million dollars! Sign here, buddy!”
