Harbour Lights

By Winged Poetess

I crossed those ebbing waves that many have before me

I left a port to find myself upon the edge of yet another

No longer walking amongst the city streets, I walk beside the sea

The cold wind on these autumn days leave me with a shudder

These busy city streets and flickering lamp posts were my home

Yet I never truly felt like I belonged amongst the hive of men

The joy I feel is indescribable when upon the seashore I solitary roam

Freedom now fills my heart, thinking that I am where the fish den

Yet despite the beauty of these coastal shores and indigo nights

My soul longs for that place where birds soar and walk among the people

I can see them now, but they are not the same these harbour lights

They are clouded now over in the distance by the church’s steeple

How I miss that city where my heart truly beats

But to return forever would be a sign of defeat
