the cadence of every word
you tipped out of your mouth
swelled and blossomed (unlike a flower)
but not unlike the crashing of waves
against a decaying sandcastle.

you asked are you alright?
and i said yes but we both knew
that i meant no and we didn’t say anymore of it.

your waves crashed and ebbed to a splash
and then the tide went out and i sat there
still silent
because there was nothing to be said.

crash & splash and the waters rip
a thousand grains of sand from the shore
and the sand knows not to resist
especially when it’s no one’s fault
that the waves are so dependent
and the sand is so detached.
