Frantic

By Sapphirefly

I walk across the ground

The grass stalks up to my waist

I pick my way through it

I think of running

No. Couldn’t do that

My legs already stung with insect bites

The sky is bright

Though the sun in falling

Though the night is coming

The moon is already up

Pale by the light sky

I stop and look

How could I not?

He must be here

I came here for him

Looking around frantically

I see nothing

The tall painful grass

The blinding blue sky

How could the moon be here

Like that?

A panic-like fluttering vibrates

In my rib cage

What if he isn’t here?

Who else could make the moon do that?

My dress is ripped and stained

Stained from the cuts

And the bites

My hand touches my burning forehead

Who else could make the moon do that?

Hands from behind

Over my eyes

I don’t bother guessing who

I know who

I turn

I open my eyes

It’s all black

I’m in bed

In my tiny apartment

I’ve kicked the covers off

I was dreaming

Wash my face in the sink

The florescent light hurts my eyes

I smile to myself

Only in my sleep
