Chapter 1
The morning’s peacefulness was broken by the shrill scream of anger. “YOU STUPID, GOOD FOR NOTHING BOY, CAN’T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT? YOU SHOULD AT LEAST BE ABLE TO OPEN THE CURTAINS WITHOUT RIPPING THEM TO SHREADS!” The small boy just gazed at the screaming tyrant in a bored manner.
“Sorry,” he said, without meaning it at all. This, obviously, only infuriated the angry woman more.
“SUCH DISRESPECT, IT IS UNACCEPTABLE!”
Really, in his opinion, anybody who could scream that loudly, and that often, shouldn’t be allowed to exist. Honestly, He didn’t see the problem. Those drapes were so ugly. ‘I don’t see how anyone could like brown curtains with orange floral print’, he thought, and gagged as another wave of putrid smelling breath washed over him as the woman in front of him opened her mouth once more. Sighing, the boy resigned himself to another bout of screaming from his irate mistress.
As you can see already, the boy was not the kind of person who lowered their head when scolded. No, he would hold his head up high, and look the person in the face. He was Arcano Furvus. He didn’t care that they didn’t like him. He didn’t care what anyone thought of him. He only cared about himself, holding up his family pride, and his rabbit. Yes, that’s right, his rabbit. The rabbit’s name was Noir, and it was a black Havana rabbit.
Arcano, better known as Cane, not only acted like he didn’t care, but he also looked it. His skin was a dark bronze, and his posture always had a slight slouch to it, not because he was afraid, but because he did not care what people thought. He had dark blue eyes, and a mop of golden-brown hair on his head.
In Cane’s opinion, his life story was pretty plain, but in reality, it was quite intriguing. He lived as a servant (though he was more like a slave) to a pair of rich people in a mansion (and a heck load of land). Unfortunately for him, the mistress had a horrid sense of style.
At thirteen years old, Cane had already gone through three foster homes, two orphanages, and a boarding school for hopeless cases. In his opinion, the latter was the best one, but they kicked him out for not being hopeless enough.
His parents died when he was six, his mother of leukemia, and his father from suicide. Cane was still annoyed about that. Ok, well, basically, his mother died, and then his father went mad from grief and killed himself, leaving a very unfortunate Cane in the first of many foster homes.
So, there he was, stuck in the service of the most horrid people in existence. It sucked. Yup, that it did.
With a last bored look at his screaming mistress, Cane turned around, picked up Noir, and strolled leisurely down the hallway, ignoring the screams from the furious woman behind him. Outside sounded like a good idea
Not much later saw Cane sitting under a tree, Noir at his side. Ok, so Noir had no actual usefulness, but he had been a gift from Cane’s one and only friend, Lux. He had met her at one of the orphanages, but one day, when Cane was nine, she had just vanished. Her belongings. Everything. Just vanished. Even her records at the orphanage were gone. Cane supposed that she could have been adopted, or transferred… but… she would have told him if she was expecting to be moved.
Shaking his head, Cane firmly shoved the memories of his friend from his mind. It didn’t help anything if you just spend your life thinking about something that happened a long time ago. You’d pretty much spend your life regretting all the mistakes you’d made.
Noir yawned (a pretty amazing feat for a rabbit) and stretched out on Cane’s lap, causing the boy to smile. Anyhow, now he was here, and he had to make the best of it.
The sun was so beautiful, and the air so calm, that Cane soon found himself dozing off. It would have been nice, but he had chores to do. With a sigh, he pulled himself up and wandered off to do the rest of his chores. Maybe he’d actually get dinner tonight.
