I jerk my head backwards as water smacks me in the face. My hair is soaked. My cute shorts and tank top are soaked. Even my underwear is soaked. Chris said canoeing. He didn’t say white water rafting on a river comparable to the freaking Amazon River. Thankfully I’m in the back of our three person “canoe,” so Chris and Satan (Jason) can’t see me fumbling about. It’s hard to wipe wet plastered hair off of my forehead when I’m trying to keep both hands on my oar.

“Would you stop moving so much Addy? You’re throwing off the balance!” I roll my eyes as Jason screams at me from the front of the canoe. Balance my ass. There is no balance on the Amazon River.

I re-grip my oar because I can feel my hands slipping. “Maybe it’s your fat stomach that’s throwing off the balance!” I respond, knowing my comment is immature and uncreative.

“Yeah, I guess it’s a bit bloated after I got to help myself to those three delicious pizzas last night!” he has to scream, turn around, and lean over the canoe so I can hear him over the rush of the water.

“You big fat spoiled brat!” I want to take back the comment when I realize it rhymes.

All of a sudden, Chris shouts, “Jason! Addy! Shut up!” he takes a breath, “We’re about to go over a huge waterfall, just, you know, by the way.”

I scream and Jason turns around to face the front. The canoe tips forward and takes a stomach-dropping fall. I pray that we won’t flip over in the five second drop. A crash of water envelopes all of us when we hit the bottom, and I’m jostled harshly in my seat.

“Everybody okay?” Chris asks as we make our way away from the waterfall.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I mumble, “just soaking wet. “

We wait for Jason’s response, but there is none. “Jason, dude. You okay?” Chris asks. No response. A bit of worry seeps into Chris’s voice, “Hey man. This isn’t funny. Just tell us you’re fine. And stop bending your head down like that. It’s freaking me out.” No response.

For some reason, my heart picks up its pace. “Jason. Answer us!” I scream, making sure he can hear me. No response. “Chris, umm, maybe we should pull the raft over.” I timidly say.

“Yeah…yeah. Good idea.”

We quickly navigate the canoe to the shore along the river. I jump out of my seat and go to check on Jason before Chris can get there. I feel my face turn white as I stare at Jason. His eyes are closed and his head is bent downwards like his neck can’t support it. “Jason,” I whisper, reaching out to touch his cheek. His face is cold and wet. But then again, so is mine. I turn to Chris, “we should get him out of the canoe.”

Chris, looking pale himself, nods, lifts Jason up, and sets him on the bank. “Jason. Wake up. Come on dude.” Chris slaps him across the face and I scream.

“Why’d you do that?”

“I don’t know,” Chris responds, “I thought it might wake him up or something.”

I glare at Chris. “Get out cell and call 911. I’m going to try to do CPR, but I haven’t done it since sophomore year in health class.”

I get on my knees and lean down towards Jason. I remember I have to do the chest compressions before the breaths. I put my hands in what I hope is the right spot and start pushing on his heart. “1, 2, 3,” I count outloud. I’m surprisingly calm in my actions considering that on the inside I’m freaking out. What if this doesn’t work? What then?

“Yeah, we were canoeing and went down a waterfall…” I hear Chris out of the corner of my ear. “Hey Addy! They say you should sit him up and hit give him stomach thrusts because there might be too much water.”

Oh. That makes sense. Why am I doing chest compressions? I didn’t even check to see if his heart had stopped beating. Shaking my head in anger at myself, I sit Jason up. I wrap my hands around him and thrust into his stomach. A spout of water comes shooting up. I do it once more and more water comes up. And suddenly, Jason starts moving.

He coughs. “Wha-“ another cough, “What just happened?”

I walk around so I’m facing him. “You’re okay,” I say, mostly for myself. And without thinking about it, I wrap my arms around him and hug him as tightly as I can. “You’re okay.”

A/N- I will continue this scene in the next chapter because I'm sure all of you want to know how Jason will react to Addy hugging him. Thanks so much to the reviewers! I really appreciate it.
