A LOST TREASURE

PROLOGUE

A woman ran through the dark streets of the small Jewish town, away from the smouldering ruins of her home and her life. In her arms she clutched two babies who slept peacefully, unaware of their mothers predicament. The streets were quiet, the only sound that could be heard was the womans feet spalshing in the puddles, soaking her with the droplets of rain water.

She approached a small double story red brick building, which she knew was a privately run orphanage. She had no desire to leave her precious burdens in the hands of a church so she had searched and discovered this orphanage which was run by a simple caring couple. Gently the woman placed the sleeping children on the sheltered doorstep, tucked a small note which she had prepared in case such a thing happened and knocked softly on the door then fled.

A moment later the door opened, batheing the children in warm, soft light. The person who had opened the door stuck his head into the rain to see where the guardian of the two babies that had been left on his doorstep had gone. Though he tried, he could not make out anything in the darkness of the night.

"Come inside, whoever left them here is probably long gone by now," a woman's voice spoke from the doorway.

The man sighed, "yes Elaria i am coming," he bent down and picked up the smallest of the two babies then trotted inside, out of the cold night air.

Elaria, as the man had called her bent down to pick up the other discovered a note tucked into the folds of the thin blanket wrapped around the baby. Reading it she picked up the baby and went inside, kicking the door shut behind her.
