The Eye
“Stop this madness now? Can’t you see what it has done? What it has done to us? What is this madness you seek and pursue?”
The young and dark woman was in tears as she clung onto the sleeve of a large black trench coat. The sleeve of the large black trench coat belonged to a young man with very distinctive hair. It was the color of red flames, and resembled them with its disheveled look.
The young man’s hair wasn’t disheveled purposefully to make its wearer look good like a popular trend, but disheveled because of what he had just done.
“Let go of me. If you know what’s best for you, let go of me. I have to go, or they will kill me.” The young man tried to remove himself from the grasps of the woman, who only fell to her knees in a begging manner and clung harder to his sleeve.
“Stop this insanity. Stop this. Turn yourself in. They will let you live. They will spare you. They will understand.”
The young woman tried to persuade the young man to stay, but he was walking now. He wanted to run, but the young woman who was still kneeling was dragging him down. The only way to move was to drag her along with him on her knees, which began to scratch up because her skirt was too short to cover them from the harsh pavement.
A shrill and almost sadistic laugh was heard from the young man after this comment. No one was going to save him. He could only flee from this country now. No one could save him now, after he just assassinated the finance minister of the country in public view. The only way to survive now would be to run, and run to the end of the world if possible. But there, he might not be even safe. The government would get him. They had too many spies. Even now, there would be a military force assembling to find him after the witnesses were forced to testify about his appearance. Then, if they caught him, he would be tortured in the underground rooms of the government building until the name of the organization that he worked for was forced from his lips. All other facts would come smoothly after that, and his body would be harvested to make fuel after they executed him because he had no more useful information left.
Helicopters could be heard from afar. The search team out to find the young man was coming, and they would be here in a matter of minutes. There was no where to hide. He had been running across an empty lot before the woman had surprised him in the middle of it. He was a clear target with the color of his hair marking the bull’s eye for the helicopters’ neuro-sedative guns.
“Let go damnit!”
“Romeo, can’t you see that I love you!?”
“Let go woman! They will kill me now because of you. If you love me, let me go, so I can live!”
“NO! I need to be with you. I love you. Stay with me. Admit your wrongs. The government will protect you. We know you were under the influence. They will help you.”
The only response to this was a more determined pace from the young man. By now, he was within 5 meters of the safe house. From there, he could descend into the bomb shelter, and the helicopters could not get him. He could descend deep into another hidden tunnel leading out of the city. He would be safe then. The tunnel was created to self destruct after only one traveler had safely exited it.
The woman’s bloody knees were a testimony of how much effort the young man was trying to get away. There was a bloody trail zigzagging across the pavement as a unofficial marker. The soldiers on foot would come soon after he was spotted.
“Romeo! Please, baby! Do this for me. Love me.”
The woman’s sobs were unstoppable now, and she near tackled the man to the ground. Her grip was like a vice, and he found that he could not move anymore. So close, only three more meters to go, and he was safe. Safe from this barbaric government that sought to control his every move and thought. He could be free somewhere else. He could believe in democracy and hope and plentiful food and peace in the other lands.
A cocking from the metal machines could be heard as they got ready their exterior neuro-sedative guns.
Too soon would the guns shoot, and send the victim into shock, so that the foot soldiers could easily capture the intended target.
“Juliet, this is your last chance. Let go of me, before we both die now.”
“No, I will never let you go.”
“This is goodbye then.”
The young man accepted his fate and stayed limp, as the woman hugged him with all her force while standing up and rocking back and forth. With a swift turn, the woman faced her back to the helicopters, shielding the young man.
“Daddy will be mad at me and punish me when he finds out I did this for you”, were her last words before she was hit.
Crack. Thump.
The guns had been shot. Out of her back protruded a long black needle slowly emptying itself of a mercury-like liquid into the woman’s back. She wouldn’t die from it. It was meant to stun the enemy until they could be interrogated; a mild dose ought to get her to sleep soon.
Having missed their target, the helicopters, shot two more needles into the air. The young woman moved gracefully, and took every one of those needles for her lover.
By the time the helicopters were done, five needles protruded from her back in a grotesque manner. She was going to die. All those poisons in her body would kill her. She was overdosed with the neuro-sedative drugs.
The foot soldiers came. Two stopped fifty meters away and set up a sniper stand. The rest all rushed forward, but stopped immediately after twenty steps. They recognized who the woman was. No one dared take another step forward. They would have their heads severed either way though.
“No one take a step further.” Her eyes were already glassy, telling of her ominous fate. The soldiers stayed in their positions and the leader communicated into his headpiece for the helicopters to cease shooting. They knew Target #2. She was supposed to be immune.
Slowly dragging the stunned young man with her, she got into the safe house with him without a single word of protest from all of the military personnel present.
By the time the door was securely shut and bolted. The young woman was fading. She was going to die. Her thoughts were too fuzzy, like she had drank too much of the rare wines on New Year’s Eve to celebrate.
“Romeo, go now. You will be safe. They will not come if I am inside here and I gave orders.”
Her words started to fade and slur, getting quieter after each word.
The young man could not respond. The tears had stopped flowing from the woman, but resumed their course from the man’s eyes. His love was dying, and she was dying for him.
It was this fate though. It had to happen. This government needed to be brought down. This was its consequence. It took down beautiful angels with it. Angels with raven hair and bright brown eyes. Little angels held dear in everyone’s heart.
“Juliet….”
“Go now, I can’t last much longer. If they read my pacemaker on the helicopter’s screen, they will know that I have expired, and then you will be dead like me too.”
“Go Romeo, and maybe I will see you later, in this land of heaven you call Utopia where you say angels will go to.”
“Juliet….goodbye now, love. I will see you soon.”
With a parting glance at his dark angel fallen from heaven, the young man left and descended into the trap door, and ran as fast as he could, away from the city.
Ten minutes later, troops burst into the building but stopped immediately. They saw a dark figurine of a woman propped up against the wall. They had measured her heart beat by her electronic pacemaker. Five minutes ago, as her heart beat decreased over time, she had expired. Five more minutes were taken to confirm her expiration. She was dead now.
An eerie red eye hung over her body emanating from her breast. It was red and blinking, signaling the expiration of a body, which could now be used as fuel. The eye symbolized that this person was someone important in the government. The eye symbolized the government. It was the symbol of the government. It was watching you. It always was. There was no way you could escape if you committed a crime. There were no secrets. There was nothing held from the government. The eye would eternally watch over you.
Knowing that the eye was still glimmering, and watching them, the soldiers each committed suicide one by one swallowing an arsenic pill hidden in their belts. The government always supplied one to the soldiers in case they were caught by the other side. The soldiers would commit suicide before letting any information slip. Now, the pills were used, so that the soldiers could die in peace, because they all knew that the crime they had committed was beyond forgiveness and they would be tortured too if captured. Ten more red signals were emitted from the bodies two minutes later.
