Yesterday morning, Mommy said she heard noises outside in the night. Mommy says that every morning.

Last night, I was scared. I’m scared every night.

I closed my eyes, though. I closed them so tight that I saw spots of light mixing with the black, and it hurt. I didn’t mind, though. They’re my guardian angels, and they’re protecting me.

I can’t close my ears. I wish I could because then I wouldn’t be scared at all. But the thud on the window was just the neighbor’s cat, wasn’t it?

I heard voices last night. They were planning something, but I couldn’t tell what. But that was just my angels planning to keep me safe.

I tried to block the noises out. I kept thinking about the spots of light. They come every time I close my eyes real tight. They don’t let me get hurt.

I woke up that morning, and Mommy said she heard noises outside again.

Tonight, I’m lying in bed again. My blankets are warm, but I’m cold. My eyes are shut tight – spots of light are dancing in front of me. I smile a little bit, because they keep me safe.

I hear something thud against the window. I’m not scared though, because it’s just the neighbor’s cat again and it can’t hurt me.

Something smashes and I feel my body tense. I relax soon though, because it’s just the drunks across the street.

I pull my blankets closer to me – it’s getting colder now. I’m shivering a little.

Something’s breathing above me, but I know it’s just Mommy coming to check on me. I think she’s worried about me. I look at the spots of light and smile again. Mommy doesn’t need to worry about me.

Something cold pushes into my chest. Sticky water stuff pours on me, but I’m not scared. I know it’s just the dog slobbering on me.

I’m feeling colder now, but I can’t move. I think someone turned the air conditioning on.

Everything’s black now. I try to close my eyes tighter to look for the spots of light, but I can’t.

I guess they went home.
