What if?

Of all questions one could ask,

Of all things to wonder,

Nothing is more shrouded in mystery

Than a simple what if?

What if the world ended today?

Would you be ready?

Could you say goodbye

Without a single regret?

Who could answer a question like that?

How about something more clear-cut,

Like:

What if you’d dropped your books

On the way to English class?

Would you be late?

Maybe.

Maybe someone

You’d never met

Would stop and help you pick them up.

Maybe you’d end up marrying that person

But then, maybe,

It could have been a mistake,

And that person only caused you pain in the end.

Maybe your life could have been so much brighter

If your fingers hadn’t slipped.

What if?

It’s like a stone in a pond

Sending ripples of questions

Waves of wonderings

That go on forever and ever

I sit on the bank

Of that water

And watch my contemplation

Spread before me.

What if it had been me in that car?

What if I’d never even leant you the keys?

A hundred questions,

Never answered,

Won’t do anything

To bring you back

But still, I have to wonder

What if?

-To Justin and what could have been
