Now we go way back to Genesis. Some of the most debated and doubted events happened here as well as in Exodus. However, I will be covering only one little yet important part of the book that leaves many skeptical: the flood. You know how the story goes; world's pratically pure evil, God picks Noah and his family to survive by building the ark, God drowns world. But where did all that water come from? Where did it go? The answer also explains another mystery.
Prior to the flood, there was never any mention of rain and people lived for very long periods of time (take Methusala for an example). So how did plants get their water? Why did people's life expectancy drop dramatically? Many scientists seeking to prove the Bible have found a plausible reason. It is possible that before the flood a very large quantity of water was in the atmosphere, many times how much there is today. In addition, there was also ground water; less than current amount, but still there. Now the Bible says that when it rained "the floodgates of heaven were opened". Now take a look at that quote; does that seem, within the Bible, to be something like a hurricane? I doubt it, as does the drawn conclusion; God caused the immense amount of water held by the atmosphere to come crashing to earth. It also mentions water bursting forth from the "great deep". In other words, literally tons and tons of water came, from above and below, and totally blanketed the entire earth, so that the highest peak was submerged (7:19). Now take into consideration also how mountains are formed. According to the tectonic plate theory, they are formed by plates pushing together and buckling under immense pressure. At this time, the world was a few thousand years younger, so the peaks probably weren't nearly as high as they are today, making even more likely that the flood did in fact occur. Afterwords, as water receeded, it probably went underground for the most part and some evaporated, giving us the atmosphere we have today.
Now, how does this explain the shortening of life time? First off, we know that skin cancer can kill people (obviously) and it can be caused by radiation from the sun. Well, with all the water in the sky blocking UV rays, less harmful radiation could reach the surface. Now, another huge part of Genesis that supports this theory is found way back in chapter 1. "And God said, 'Let there be an expanse between the waters to seperate water from water.' So God made the expanse and seperated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse 'sky.' And there was evening, and there was morning - the second day." (1:6-8, NIV) God seperated the water and called the space between sky. So where is the water above? We've seen space; no water there. The only reasonable explanation is what is stated in this theory; there was alot of water up in the atmosphere. So, after the flood, water receeded back down into the earth in the form of ground water, which people find when they dig wells. With this, everything fits into place, and I have yet to find another theory that would be any better and still fit the description found in little pieces throughout Genesis.
Sidenotes
fish of the land Many fossils of fish have been found in such random places as mountaintops and deserts, supporting evidence of the flood.
widespread evidence Throughout the world are found various ancient recordings of flood accounts of the flood, all placing it at around the same time and having similar tales as to what happened.
a very large box The word "ark" can be replaced by "box", which many of the affore mentioned accounts mention, especially one originating from around current - day Mexico.
fresh fish, salt fish One argument commonly used against the flood is what would happen to all the fresh water fish. If a massive amount of freshwater rains down, chances are salt water and fresh won't mix all that much, but that salt, being the denser of the two, would stay low and in the general area of the ocean while fresh would appear above land.
Pangaea There is much supporting the idea of there previously being one large super continent, "Pangaea". This is supported by the flood itself, as the Bible says that water "sprang forth", possibly starting continental drift, as well as in chapter one, when God speaks about the gathered waters, which implies not being seperated by something; e.g., land. For this to be true, there would have to be a large landmass stretching from the north to the south poles; Pangaea. Furthermore, there are various rock and mountain matches between South America and West Africa, not to mention that their shapes seem to fit like a jiggsaw puzzle.
