Lights up on Juliet.

--

Juliet – (sighs, reads from crumpled piece of paper, not looking up)

-

“I looked into your eyes the other day

And I don’t know what I saw.

It was… Lust, I think, in a way,

Pure passion, but love? I’m not so sure.

You were smiling as we walked, hand-in-hand.

The waves lapped upon the shore.

It was perfect, in a way, almost nice;

We danced together, laughed as one and kissed

As the rain began to pour.

I span you round and round in my arms and

Made-believe that you were mine.

Such an ‘emo’ thing for me to do –

It was sad, silly, illogical – all this, I won’t deny.

I hate how cheesy I can be

Don’t you hate it too? How all this rhymes?

It’s so goddamned good,

All so awfully, purely, happily, nice.

Uh-oh, did I forget to say those magic words before?

Those three that are always lies

According to you. They’re fake, unreal

Like, ‘Oh My God, you look beautiful tonight.’

It’s a nightmare that you’re so full of brokenness,

You’re so cynical, you’re amazing, you’re great, you’re not right

For most, but you’re too right for me.

For me, you’re far too, far too, much too right.

-

We fit, like hands holding each other,

Like hat to a head, a glove ‘round fingertips,

And we are beautiful.

And thank you,

Thank you, for reminding me

That life isn’t all about what everyone else thinks.

It’s about living something that’s not a lie,

It’s about being happy, and God, how I am with you,

We are astounding, incredible and don’t forget,

We Are Alive.

-

It bugs me how your hair tumbles down your back,

Into my hands, and I just can’t help but reach out and

Tangle it expertly between my long fingers,

And kiss you with your face cupped gently in my hands.

You are a drug for me,

Better than alcohol, nicotine or ecstasy,

And I lay there, head in your lap,

Mouth open, waiting for you to induce me

With your soft plum lips;

Your hair shrouds us from the rest of the world,

You come less than moments away,

And I’m aching for you,

And you pause for thought,

And from those lips you whisper gently,

‘I’d love you if it was the Right Thing to do…’

And I scoff and laugh and deep down I hurt and

You take away what you are to me…”

(eyelids flutter down, tears pour; her voice chokes, her make-up runs)

“…It’s just shocking that I love you, isn’t it?”

(whispers, tearfully)

“Signed,

Romeo.”

-

(sighs, pushes hair back from face)
