I am awash in a sea of apathy

Floating delicately I press my face to the windows

And stare out at the void of space—my conscience

How many bright gems of opportunity glitter and sparkle

Just within my reach

The Milky Way sings to me of the road to my future

That white path weaving its way through time.

So I sit on the highway and stare down at the darkness

Welling, inky, mysterious, and seductive

What secrets beyond that door?

Another shooting star passes over my head

Illuminating my heart so I stir from the edge

Where I dangled my legs as the open pit yawned before me.

A thousand wordless feelings flood and swirl around me

Memories painful

Memories bittersweet

Memories embarrassing

Memories of fondness and laughter and love

I hurt, so I cry

I laugh, so I am happy

I love and it is a mixture of both.

I am awash in a sea of apathy

Even if the apathy is not mine

It buoys me up, it drags at my heels

It gives me a shell

Behind which to brood
