Cries In the Dark

In the dark, we cannot see,

And we think we’re alone

But we are never alone

-------------------------------------

Eyes widen as the lights go out

Hair stands on end as cold chills run round our flesh

Skin gets rough, and hearing gets so acute

That we hears things we normally don’t

And one would swear there is a crying in the wind

------------------------------------------

So let me spin you a tale, my children dear

Of just what happens when the moon is out

And the sun has deserted you

Out from the woods come black spirits

To haunt you in your dreams

And dark faeries to kiss tears into your eyes

And the butterflies of the night come to muffle your screams

And only in the wind can they hear your cries

--------------------------------------------------

Mummy and Daddy are in bed for the night

Trusting your tight tucked covers to see your safety

But linen can’t keep pitchforks away from your heart

The night children come out from under the bed

They cry and squirm and rattle their chains so horridly,

For they are those taken by Him

They claw and scratch, trying to claim you for their own

And again, you can’t scream

Soon He arrives, shaping Himself in the shadows

He weighs and measures you, planning just what to do with you

And you wish you could run, but your sheets confine you

And now your parents stir as your cries infect their dreams

----------------------------------------------------

They wake and rush upstairs

Just in time to see the sun rise

On an empty bed
