Several centuries ago, a couple dimensions to the left and up a bit, there was a developing society. As societies go it was rather advanced for its short age, but as all worlds in its current stage of development do, it had some delusions. No, they didn't believe the world flat and were quite aware of the concept that things of different sizes fell down at the same rate when you dropped them. Actually, the great scholars of their world subscribed to the idea that the worlds were all tied together with great big ropes, or chains. That they were tied in such a way so that they orbited correctly and kept each other from flying apart. It was so obvious to them, how else would everything stay in place? So, people aspired to find the place where the line linked to their little planet, it was the world's greatest mystery. Where was it? It must be there, they knew it was!
The peoples of the world were becoming very disheartened, doubting themselves more and more each day. Maybe, maybe it wasn't there at all. Some were wondering if it all worked differently than they thought. Until, one day, they discovered a mountain in an area free of human population. This mountain was rather unremarkable, really, except for the odd shape of its peak, it curled over like a hook, most unusual. Was this it? They had found the link to the rest of the solar system! But where was the rope, the link, the connection to everything else that was? Why wasn't it there? Maybe because the ropes were created with the hair and blood of the gods themselves mortals could not see it? There was much debate, but despite this the majority of the population believed the idea that mortals could not see that which has the very essence of the gods put into its creation.
So, places of study, temples of the scholars sprouted up in the foothills, dotting the landscape surrounding this wonderful mountain. Those in search of knowledge came from around this small sphere to hike to the summit and study what kept their planet in place. Study, but never touch, meditating on this wondrous connection to places outside their planet and beyond their understanding. A great many humans that would have otherwise been normal and rather boring gained an appreciation for knowledge because of studies in these academies during their early childhood. Thus the world was soon quite rich with learned scholars, inventing great things and teaching those that could not travel to the mountain.
This intelligence was put to good use, soon enough a new more efficient way of travel was developed, medicine and vaccines were slowly being created and the world's cultures were starting to integrate all these new technologies into themselves. The world was quickly becoming a better place. Many of these skilled persons settled in the very foothills they had studied in during their youth, building houses and roads, and attracting businesses. Years later a city had formed and it was steadily growing larger, feeding itself on the plentiful and great resources that surrounded it.
To the current time and even in such a technologically advanced world, parents continue sending their children to the academies. Said places of learning are kept as they were, surrounded by greenery, but now there is a bustling city beyond those trees. A city called The Curl Around The Mountain, for the way it wound around the mountain, thinly separated by one long strip of park in which most of the schools are contained. It is the largest population center in their world now, filled with millions of human lives.
That, my dears, is the story of a city created and kept moving by a mere delusion. Faith is, after all, the strongest force for motivating humans, isn't it? A world bettered because it had gods to believe in and a place of refuge, peacefully separate from any wars that may go on. Fascinating, no?
