Author's notes: A poem written afterI visted the battlfields and graveyards of the first world war
Those that fell
No vision of the mind,
Nor spirit eye
Can compare to the
Nightmarish realities
That haunt this blood-scarred land,
Sacred, only
to those that fell.
Fields of unknown dead,
Lost to time.
The fallen honoured
With a nameless grave.
“Known unto God,”
Meaningless words now,
To those that fell.
Forgotten to history,
A generation lost
Within the confining walls
Of the past.
Who now tolls the bell,
For those that fell?
