A/N: wow, i must've written this years ago. the things you find in the sub-sub-sub-sub folders on your computer...anyways, i think that this was inspired (oddly enough) by the song "The Little Drummer Boy" and yes, i mean the christmas carol...anyways, it's told from the POV of northern (Union) soldiers in the american civil war. tell me what you think.

Drummer Boy

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

We march,
Heads high,
Knees high,
Hearts high,
To the sound of battle.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

Our drummer boy,
Dressed all in blue,
Marches with us,
Drumming to the beat
Of our sore feet.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

We stop at the top,
Of the highest hill,
Banners waving,
Uniforms flapping,
The only sound now is drums.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

We see them,
A grey cloud,
Our enemies,
The rebels.
Their drums compete with ours.

Rat-a-tat-tat

Rat-a-tat-tat

Rat-a-tat-tat

Rat-a-tat-tat

It starts.
We shoot.
Men fall,
Screaming,
Dying.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

Now we are all just men,
Not enemies,
Not opposites,
Just men,

And a drummer boy.

Rat-a-tat-tat
Rat-a-tat-tat

The drums play on,
Marching the dead to heaven,
Marching the living to battle,
Marching the strong to life,
Marching us to victory.

Forever, the drums play on.

Rat-a-tat-tat
