As I lay down to die;
All around me I see fires
That reach up to the sky.
And as the fire burns my skin,
I think about this world I’m in,
From deep within me comes great fear
When I realize why I am here.
Then I begin to see others—
Their flesh deformed and black.
I watch them stumble by, aghast
At the limbs some of them lack.
They glare and curse at me;
Shove me out of the way.
They tell me I’d better respect them
If I want to stay.
And as the fire burns my skin,
I think about this world I’m in,
From deep within me comes great fear
Now that I know why I’m here.
But then I turn around and shout,
“I do not want to stay!”
AT this they laugh evilly and reply,
“There’s no way to get away.”
When they leave I sit down
And watch as demons fly over me.
I begin to sing a sad song
Sad as any could be.
And as the fire burns my skin,
I think about this world I’m in,
From deep within me comes great fear
Because I know why I am here.
I hear the others crying
In anger, pain, and sadness.
I know that, like me, they are wondering
How they can stop the madness.
Yet I don’t cry like the others,
As the fire stings my skin;
The pain is too much for me to bear,
But I know that I burn for my sins.
