The groom plucks a key,

From the rapture tree and,

Opens her ribcage like a screaming armoire,

Her lungs and liver screaming

Mercy, mercy, mercy!

While they arrange the wires in her heart,

I now pronounce you,

Smiling like a grave,

I now pronounce you a New York slave.

The Blood Brothers, New York Slave

.chapter 12.

“What are you so chipper about?” Saige eyed the bubbly blonde with fear.

“There’s a dance!”

“Oh boy,” Saige replied, unenthusiastically as she opened up her locker door

“My dear Saige, we have to go dress shopping!” Carrie continued, shoving a book in her own cluttered space. It fell bounced back out to the ground, making the girl have to bend to get it.

“Brilliant.”

“You’re going to the dance, right?”

“Hadn’t planned on it.”

“Well now you can.” Saige muttered something under her breath. “What was that?” Carrie asked, spinning around to look at her friend sharply.

“Nothing!” Saige exclaimed, putting her hands up in surrender.

It had been a week since she had broken everything off with Seth. He paid little to no attention to her in class and she did likewise. Milo didn’t bring up the touchy subject of which she was thankful for while Danny continued to pester about her love affairs.

Saige sighed while her mind continued to wander as Carrie scanned through the racks upon racks of dresses. Long, short, lacy, and frilly.

“Should I wear a long dress or is that too old fashioned?” Carrie asked, holding up a long cream colored dress.

“Um, that kind of looks like a cheap wedding dress,” Saige surmised from her seat in the red cushioned chair.

“Funny. I didn’t see you looking around.”

“Because this place has granny dresses.” Carrie gasped, throwing the dress she was holding on a random rack.

“No it’s not…” she retorted. Saige pointed to her left where Carrie looked to see two 70-something year old women searching for a dress for what seemed to be a granddaughter’s wedding. Carrie made a grim face. “I thought it was vintage… Let’s go.” Saige happily hopped up from the chair.

They wandered around the mall, looking through the shops’ windows as they passed. Saige stopped abruptly, eyes set on the dress holding together the mannequin. A green dress with a halter top cut. It was simple but all Saige really wanted. She smiled.

“Huh,” Carrie commented. “I guess you found the dress.” Saige merely nodded before trailing behind Carrie into the store. Finding the right size, she dashed for a dressing room.

“There isn’t a mirror in here. Why the hell isn’t there a mirror in here?!” Saige demanded from inside the tiny square room.

“It’s on the outside of the door,” Carrie added, helpfully.

“Morons,” Saige murmured as she walked out. Carrie grinned.

“You’re so pretty! And your boobs actually look like they’re there!”

Saige glared at her, “Shut up.” She looked to the mirror, turning to see if her panties were popping out like that one incident she tried so hard to forget… “But do you really think I look pretty?”

“Beautiful.” Carrie smiled and clapped her hands. Saige smiled, heading back into the changing room while Carrie looked around for her own dress. Eventually she found a knee-length black dress.

“Sexy!” Saige exclaimed as Carrie twirled. “It makes you look less like a twig.” Carrie halted her twirl.

“Are you saying I look fat?”

“No, you just look like you aren’t going to fly away if I blew at you.” Carrie glared in return.

The day of the dance came—Friday—and the majority of the school was in a cheery mood. Other than that, everything was routine… except for the one girl sitting at their table at lunch, playing with her hair, unamused.

“Can we help you?” Saige sat her tray down on the table, eyeing up the girl in the cheerleading outfit.

“Um… no,” she responded, looking up at her. She was a brunette, which was a surprise because most of the girls on the cheerleading squad dyed their hair neon blonde. Carrie and Saige exchanged weird looks before sitting down a little ways a way from the girl. Zach came up to them following Milo.

“Hey,” the girl called as she smiled up at Milo.

“Hey. What are you doing here?” He sat next to her while Saige and Carrie couldn’t turn away.

“I was lonely all the way over there by my friends so I thought I’d say hi!” she said in a cutesy voice. Saige blinked but resumed her blank stare.

“That’s sweet,” Milo said rather blandly. Then, the most remarkable thing happened. They kissed.

Aubrey popped out of nowhere (a skill she had been getting excessively good at lately) and tapped the cheerleader on the shoulder. “Helena! Come on! We need to discuss plans.” Helena nodded before getting up and walking away with her friend.

“Well then…” Saige mumbled after a bout of silence. Milo turned to look at her.

“Well then what?”

“She’s a… cheerleader…”

“Yeah, so?” He seemed to be getting a tad angry.

“Just seems a little different for you, I guess. I thought you were gay,” she said, wanting to push him farther for some reason.

“Fuck you.”

“Ah ah ah! Don’t want to ruin your new relationship so soon, do we?”

“Why Saigey, are you jealous?”

“Of her? No! You must be some kind of idiot to believe—”

“I mean of me having a relationship and you not.” He smirked. Suddenly, she wanted to smack his face till his mouth fell off. Stop with the violent thoughts, she requested to herself. She looked to Zach and Carrie who were both listening rather intently. In fact, a french fry was poised to Zach’s gaping mouth, seemingly as if it were frozen. She glared at Milo for reminding her of Seth.

“Hope she doesn’t ditch you tonight for the dance for a tanning appointment. Not that I’d blame her.”

“Like we’d go to that,” he sneered.

“Have fun,” she continued, standing up and leaving. Milo couldn’t take his eyes off her disappearing form.

The gymnasium was decorated with streamers on the doors, cloth on the tables, lights flashing, and a DJ setup in the front. Saige looked at the already forming crowd in disbelief; they had even gotten there early upon request of an excited Carrie. Saige plopped down into a nearby seat while Carrie bounced in one spot, clutching Zach’s hand tighter. She felt pity for the poor boy.

“Wanna dance?” Carrie asked her boyfriend, pulling him towards the speakers before he had a chance to respond. How exciting, she mocked in her mind as she tapped her nails against the plastic table. Then she felt a tapping on her shoulder. She looked up to see Danny, and she gave him a polite, small smile. He sat down beside her.

“Having fun?” he asked with a grin on.

“Doesn’t it look like it?” She gave him a lazy smile in return.

“Well… Would you like to dance?”

“Um… I’d rather not.” He frowned.

“Why not?”

She shrugged, “I don’t like dancing.” He gave her a weird look.

“Then why’d you come here?”

“For the scenery.” She looked towards what was designated the ‘dance floor’ to eye a couple practically humping each other. “Exquisite,” she said with a sarcastic wave of the hand.

“Come on.” He took her hand and pulled her gently and (surprisingly) she followed. She sighed before the two headed to the center. The song had ended and the DJ began a slow song. Saige thanked God for it. Now all she had to do was wobble back and forth while keeping Danny’s hands from roaming. And they did, as expected. She laughed, smacking his hand away from her butt.

“That’s not very gentleman like of you.”

“And since when have I been a gentleman?”

“You’re right,” she nodded. She laid her head down on his shoulder and he caressed the small of her back. They flowed back and forth and she closed her eyes feeling as if this were some dream.

“You look gorgeous tonight,” she heard him whisper. She smiled, still keeping her eyes closed.

“You too,” she murmured out. And she wasn’t lying; he looked extremely handsome tonight. She understood why so many girls liked him on looks alone.

She opened her eyes to catch a glimpse of Carrie and Zach dancing as well. She frowned when she realized they looked like they were fighting. They swayed a different direction and Saige saw Aubrey sitting at her table in a pale pink dress, glaring. They turned again and saw Seth standing against the wall, supervising. But he was keeping his eyes mostly on her. They locked eyes and she had too look away. She missed talking to him; they had barely spoken the entire week.

The song ended and she left Danny to head off to the bathroom. She was washing her hands in the sink when the bathroom door flew open. She watched dully as Aubrey walked in with a strut that she mush have thought looked menacing but for everyone else looked like a turkey having an orange shoved up its ass for Thanksgiving. Well, that’s how Saige pictured it.

“You are like, such a whore!” she screamed out. Saige stared back at her, wondering if this girl had gone insane.

“Excuse me?”

“Oh you heard me… whore!”

Saige gave off a little laugh. “You know you’re not looking into your compact mirror, right?” Aubrey’s eyes widened after a second.

“Are you calling me a whore?”

“That’s what everyone is calling you.” Saige grabbed some paper towels to dry her hands.

“Ha! You’re a liar! They so do not! Everyone loves me.”

“Whatever.” She headed towards the door.

“Stop walking and pay attention to me!!!” Saige turned around and glared at her.

“What is your problem, you pink psycho? Just leave me alone.” With that, Aubrey slapped Saige across the face. Stunned, Saige starred at the girl who seemed to have a victory smile on. Saige glared at her with venomous eyes before punching her in the made up face, watching her fall on her back, and then walked out.

She continued on until she was outside, finding a bench to sit down on. She took a deep breath. She touched her sore cheek and grinned at remembering Aubrey flat on her back.

“Hey.” His deep voice startled her. She looked up at Seth as he sat down next to her.

“What are you doing out here?” she asked, playing with the end of her dress.

“Checking up on you.” She smiled.

“Well you just missed me dealing out drugs. You’re not very good at supervising, did you know?”

“You’re beautiful tonight.”

“Wha—um… Thank you.” Her face reddened at her speech problems.

“I miss you and your little mouth.”

“That sounded dirty.” She gave a small laugh, grinning. She glanced around before giving him a small kiss on his lips. As she pulled away, she noticed he continued to stare at her own lips. Her smile widened as she leaned forward.

How about… I’ll stop cutting if you stop with Warren? Deal?”

She fell back in her seat, remembering Milo. She stood up, and he followed suit.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“My friends are probably missing me.” She headed for the entrance of the building.

“Saige!” she looked back at him, and he jogged up to her. Pulling her face to his, he kissed her. She didn’t stop him but she didn’t kiss back. Instead, all the action was in her head. Her mind was whirling. Milo doesn’t care. He doesn’t; so don’t worry about it. Kiss him. KISS HIM!

At last she returned his kiss with furor. Suddenly, she pulled away, “What if we’re seen?” He smiled, pulling her towards his red little car.

“Where have you been?” Carrie looked at Saige who was grinning widely.

“Oh, outside.” She put on her bored face.

“Why?” Carrie asked somewhat suspiciously.

“Just needed some air.” She felt bad about lying to her best friend but for the moment, it was right.

“Well,” she linked arms with Saige, “You missed Aubrey running out of the bathroom with a bloody nose. She clung onto Danny saying, ‘Look! Look what she did! Go and fight for me! Where are you going? Love me! Love meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!’ And then she started crying.”

“Oh… that’s… something.”

“Yeah, I—”

“Hey.” Saige jumped and turned to see Danny behind them. Carrie beamed up at him with a smile but to her dismay, he was only staring at Saige.

“Dance?” Saige nodded happily and they walked off to the dance floor with their arms intertwined. A sigh escaped from Carrie before she wondered off, looking for Zach.
